Common Jewelry Repairs

There are a myriad of services our teams may recommend to ensure your jewelry is looking its best. Here are some of the most common services we work with at Day's Jewelers.

Ring Sizings

At Day's Jewelers, the cost of ring sizing is determined by several factors, including the type of material, the width of the band, and the number of sizes the ring needs to be adjusted. Because each piece is different, we do need to evaluate the ring in person to provide an accurate estimate. Completion time can range from one to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the work and the current schedule of our in-house goldsmiths.

Ring sizing involves precise craftsmanship. To size a ring down, a small portion of the band is carefully removed, and the ends are joined and soldered. To size a ring up, additional metal is added to the band and then soldered in place. After the adjustment, the ring is polished and smoothed to ensure a seamless finish with no visible signs of alteration.

Please note that not all rings can be resized. Certain materials, such as tungsten, and specific styles, like eternity bands, may not allow for traditional sizing. If your ring falls into one of these categories, we’ll be happy to review alternative options with you.

Having Trouble Removing a Stuck Ring?

If your ring is stuck on your finger, there’s no need to worry—there are several safe and effective methods you can try.

One of our most recommended techniques is using Windex. Simply spray a small amount on your finger and the ring (please avoid this method if your ring contains delicate natural gemstones such as pearls or coral), then gently twist the ring to ease it off. You may need to reapply the spray a few times for best results.

If that doesn't work, another helpful method is wrapping dental floss or thread snugly around your finger above the ring. This can help reduce swelling and allow the ring to slide off more easily.

Still stuck? We invite you to visit your nearest Day's store. Our experienced associates can assist you using trusted methods, and if necessary, we can carefully cut the ring using a specialized tool that removes the ring without harming your finger.

After the ring is safely removed, we’ll be happy to discuss repair options with you so you can continue to enjoy your treasured piece.

Recommendations: Broken/Thin Prongs or Shanks

To ensure your ring is in good condition, we encourage you to visit your local Day's once every six months for a complimentary cleaning and inspection. Our associates will examine your ring for any spots of wear, like the shank, the band, and the prongs. If we find any areas of concern (this could include a thin shank or band, worn or broken prongs, or other areas of wear) we will recommend repair services to ensure no damage comes to your ring and no stones are lost.

These preventative repairs can help avoid the tragedy of losing a stone or the band of your ring breaking. You do not need an appointment at Day's for this service; stop in anytime it's convenient.

If you are not local, we recommend finding a reputable jeweler in your area to perform this service, so that your jewelry is in good shape throughout the years.

Chain Repair

The most common chain repairs we see at Day's Jewelers

Broken Parts

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, life throws a curveball at our chains in the form of little hands or an unexpected catch. When a chain is pulled too hard, a link can break or the clasp can malfunction.

Most of the time, we can weld chain links back together. These links will be stronger than ever, and the chain doesn't usually break in the same place again. Clasps are generally easy to replace, depending on the style.

Sometimes, the damage done to a chain may be severe enough that it makes the most sense to replace it. If this is the case, our associates will work with you one-on-one to pick out another chain that can withstand the curveballs life throws.

Stretched Chains

Chains that are worn everyday, whether in the form of necklaces, bracelets, or anklets, can experience stretching over time. This is due to general wear and tear - snagging the chain, catching it on clothing, etc.

If you are wearing a chain every day, this general stretch cannot be avoided. By removing chains at night, you can reduce the pace at which a chain stretches, but unless the chain is never caught or pulled on, it will eventually stretch a little bit.

If you find that a chain has stretched past your liking, we can easily take care of that. Our goldsmiths can remove a few links to return the chain back to its original length, or a new length. We can add jump rings to give you more flexible length options. Weak or broken links can be removed and/or replaced.

Not all stretched chains can or should be fixed. There may be times our associates find that a chain should be replaced rather than repaired. If this is the case, however, our associates will be happy to work with you in picking out a new chain.
