The Birthstone of May

Emerald gemstones come in a variety of green hues. As part of the beryl mineral family, these stones possess a hardness rating of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale. They are classified as beryllium aluminum silicate, with the chemical formula Be3AI2(SiO3)6. Emeralds form through hydrothermal processes and pegmatite deposits; for emeralds to form, a precise combination of elements, temperature, and pressure takes millions of years to complete.

The History of Emerald

Emerald’s name is derived from the Ancient Greek term "smaragdos,” which translates to "green.” Emeralds were mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC. Cleopatra valued emerald gemstones greatly, claiming ownership of all emerald mines in Egypt during her reign. The ancient Egyptians incorporated emeralds into both their jewelry and elaborate burial customs, frequently placing emerald stones with their leaders as symbols of protection. In contrast, the Muzo people of Colombia had well-hidden and highly prized emerald mines, which were so skillfully concealed that it took Spanish onquistadors almost twenty years to uncover them. In contemporary times, emeralds represent loyalty, new beginnings, peace, and security, making them not only a beautiful gem for adornment but also a meaningful gift for a loved one, especially for those born in May. They remain highly coveted by the wealthy and famous.

Availability & Mining Locations of Emerald

While emeralds in general are fairly common, high-quality and sizable emeralds are particularly rare. Currently, the primary sources of emerald mining are Colombia, Zambia, and Brazil.

Enhancements & Care of Emerald

Emeralds can be subjected to various enhancements including oiling, resin filling, dyeing, irradiation, lasering, and coating. Untreated, natural emeralds are considerably rarer and typically more costly than their treated counterparts. Untreated emeralds, particularly those exhibiting high brilliance and minimal inclusions, are exceptionally rare, often making up only a small fraction of the market. The existence of inclusions or any treatments can greatly diminish the value of an emerald. These gemstones can be maintained by cleaning them with warm, soapy water and gentle scrubbing.
