The Birthstone of August
Peridot gemstones are found in a variety of green hues. As part of the olivine mineral group, these stones possess a hardness rating of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale. Identified as magnesium iron silicate with a chemical formula of (Mg,Fe)2SIO4, peridot is formed in the upper mantle of the Earth under conditions of high temperature and pressure. Peridot is brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions of silica-poor magmas from deep within the Earth.
The History of Peridot
The earliest known discovery of peridot dates back to 1500 BC, with its name origin remaining uncertain; however, many scholars suggest that it is derived from the Arabic term "farida," which translates to "gem." Peridot jewelry originates from deposits found on a small volcanic island in the Red Sea known as Topazios, which is currently called St. John’s Island or Zabargad.
The ancient Egyptians referred to peridot as the "gem of the sun," believing it provided protection against the fears associated with the night. The gemstone saw a revival in popularity during the 1990s after new deposits were discovered in Pakistan, yielding some of the highest quality peridots ever found, including 'Kashmir peridots' that weighed over 100 carats.
The most significant peridot deposit in the world is located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, where approximately 80 to 95 percent of the global peridot supply is sourced. This abundance of peridot deposits has enabled the fulfillment of contemporary demand for peridots, offering individuals born in August accessible options to wear this exquisite green birthstone.
Availability & Mining Locations of Peridot
While peridot is relatively plentiful, high-quality gem-grade peridot, particularly the pure green variety, is both rare and valuable. Currently, the primary sources of peridot mining are located in Myanmar, Pakistan, and Chile.
Enhancements & Care of Peridot
Peridot gemstones are usually natural; however, mild heat treatment is occasionally employed to enhance color consistency. In rare instances, surface coatings may be applied to improve luster. Generally, natural, untreated peridot commands a higher price compared to lab-created or enhanced varieties. Natural peridot, particularly those exhibiting a vibrant green hue and minimal inclusions, is prized for its authenticity and rarity. It is safe to clean peridot using warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners, as well as other harsh chemicals, should be avoided.
