Origin

Originally Alexandrite was found in Russia but can also be found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, East Africa and India.

History

Alexandrite is one of the rarest and most enchanting of the gemstones. Legends tell of alexandrite’s power to bestow the ability to foresee danger. Alexandrite was discovered in Russia around 1831 during the reign of Czar Alexander II.

Fashion

Alexandrite is a fun gemstone! The color of Alexandrite will have green to purple hues depending on the cut of the stone, the lighting, the setting and is quiet enchanting! Alexandrite is a hard gemstone and is one that can sustain everyday wear. Add a little magic to your look!

Formation

Alexandrite’s formation is an incredibly rare phenomenon. The gemstone is the color changing variety of the chrysoberyl mineral. Alexandrite will only form when aluminum and beryllium combine with elements of iron, titanium and most importantly, chromium. Chromium causes the color of alexandrite to shift with light. During the daylight, alexandrite will shimmer with hues of green and purple in lamp light. Chromium’s rarity makes alexandrite one of the most valuable gemstones.

Cleaning & Care

Alexandrite can be easily cleaned at home with warm soapy water and a soft brush. An ultrasonic or steam cleaner may also be used.

Treatments

Alexandrite gemstones are typically untreated, but imitation stones do exist. Alexandrite stones may be dyed or oiled, but this is not very common. Many Alexandrites are synthetic and others may be natural 'simulated' gemstones, such as color change garnet, sapphire or spinel. Many synthetic Alexandrite stones are actually Ruby or Sapphires that have been laced or infused with either chromium or vanadium to provide color. Synthetic Alexandrite has been available on the market since the 1960s.
