  1. Catherine the Great's Emerald: Power, Strength, and Beauty

Catherine the Great's Emerald: Power, Strength, and Beauty
May's birthstone, the emerald, has long been known for its representation of power and strength, but did you know that it was a favorite of Catherine the Great?  The longest female ruler of Russia, Catherine the Great was in power for 34 years, from 1762-1796.  Assuming the throne after her husband, Peter’s, coup-spurred removal (which was, in part, encouraged by Catherine herself!), Catherine the Great was unfortunately not entirely popular for very long.  Just a week after his removal from the throne, Peter was killed by who is believed to have been the brother of one of Catherine’s lovers.  This put her in an unfavorable light for the general public, but she still managed a long and successful imperial career! ...

  4. Joseph Corey Selected as President of Day's Jewelers

Day’s Jewelers has promoted Joseph Corey as President of the 107-year-old Maine family business. The company is based in Waterville, Maine and operates 8 jewelry stores throughout New Hampshire and Maine. Corey replaces his father, Jeff Corey, and is the third generation of Coreys to be employed at Day’s. In 1938, 11-year-old Robert Corey, Joseph’s grandfather, got his first job at Day’s on Congress Street in Portland. The elder Corey became Manager of Day’s Caribou, Maine store in 1946. He left Day’s in 1955 to open his own store, Robert’s Jewelry in Madawaska, ME.  In 1988, Robert’s sons, James Corey and Jeffery Corey and Jeff’s wife Kathy purchased Day’s from its original owners, Si ...

  6. Zodiac Stones vs. Modern Birthstones: What's the Difference?

Zodiac Stones vs. Modern Birthstones: What's the Difference?
I’m sure you’ve all heard of birthstones.  They’re fun, unique, and a great way to represent your birth month.  Many of you may even have birthstone jewelry already!  I’m sure, also, that you’ve heard at least a little bit about zodiac signs.  Who doesn’t enjoy looking through their weekly horoscope, making star charts with their partners to map your compatibility, or remembering friends’ birthdays based just on their sign?  I’m sure it’s not just me!  Zodiac signs are fun and popular, so it would be tough not to hear pieces of information about them.  What you may not have heard nearly as much about, however, are zodiac stones.  Until recently, I hadn’t either!   ...

  7. April's famous birthstone: The Hope Diamond

April's famous birthstone: The Hope Diamond
If you’re lucky enough to have a birthday in April, your birthstone is the beautiful, timeless diamond.  Though diamonds are absolutely stunning to begin with, there are a few that outshine all the rest.  My personal favorite, and the one that is likely the most famous, is the Hope Diamond.   Photo by Chip Clark, Smithsonian Institution The Hope Diamond is believed to have originated from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India, dating back to French royalty in 1668 when a merchant sold the original 112 3/16 carat diamond to King Louis XIV.  At the time, the diamond had not been c ...

  10. KP Sangvhi Empowers Women in India

KP Sangvhi Empowers Women in India
Approximately 92 percent of the world’s diamonds are cut in India. Surat, to be specific.  India cuts the majority of diamonds because of the country’s closeness to mines located in Africa and other surrounding countries. India’s labor is also cheap and skilled. However, cheap and skilled labor comes at a cost. Indian women don’t often have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to work in these diamond factories. KP Sangvhi changed that in 2012. It became the first diamond manufacturer in India to open a women-run diamond factory, and has changed the lives of all of its employees.  ...
