History

Formation

Onyx is a form of chalcedony quartz. It is a layered, or banded stone typically with a black base and a white upper layer.

Cleaning & Care

Avoid exposure to heat or contact with chemicals. To clean, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush and a solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on onyx. 

Treatments

Banded onyx is often dyed to produce the uniform, solid black gemstone that is popular in jewelry.
