  • Amethyst: 2018 Color of the Year

This February let's channel the late musical icon, Prince, and celebrate Purple Rain! Purple "Reign", that is! Per Pantone, the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, and here at Day's Jewelers we are ready to "rock" the color purple. Of course, there is no greater month to for us to embrace Ultra Violet than February when birthstone Amethyst dominates the jewelry world.

If you haven't already, very soon you will be seeing Ultra Violet everywhere. From furniture to hair color, candy packaging to cosmetics, clothing to vehicles, so I'm blogging to remind you to accessorize 2018 with amethyst!

As part of the Quartz family, amethyst is abundant, low maintenance, durable, affordable, and a fabulous way to show off a highly fashionable jeweled look for a great price. One of my favorite ways to show off amethyst is by stacking Ed Levin handmade sterling silver bangles featuring our favorite purple gem!

Tales have been told that supernatural powers have been linked to amethyst. For centuries, amethyst had been believed to heal and protect people from illnesses. Many even believed drinking alcoholic beverages served in amethyst cups would prevent drunkenness. While today we have modern medicine on our side, amethyst is still considered to be a healer of the body and soul through energy according to many who practice alternative medicine. Additionally, many millennials wear not only amethyst, but other Quartz crystals as well, for mental, physical, and spiritual intervention in their daily lives. Our new silver line, T. Jazelle, brings that trend to the our reality with The Cleo Collection, displaying singular cylindrical crystals on a 36 inch chain; and expansion bracelets with polished beads made out of genuine gemstones accessorized with a single silver charm.

Guest Fashionista, Morgan Bouchard, formerly of the Topsham Day's Jewelers, was kind enough to put together outfit pairings featuring Ultra Violet for your style inspiration. To enhance these looks, come try on this east-to-west oriented oval amethyst and diamond necklace set in white gold on an 18 inch chain. Of course, you will also need to try on the matching pair of earrings where the oval amethyst are oriented North-to-South. Top off the jeweled pairing by wearing this ESTATE oval amethyst ring set in 14k white gold. You'll want to act fast on the ring, it's bold, beautiful, and a great big look - but we only have ONE in company and it's the only one we will ever have!

So there you have it. Amethyst, the color of royalty, is the reigning "Prince" of 2018 thanks to Pantone and the color Ultra Violet. With Valentine's Day less than 2 weeks away, make sure to keep on trend by shopping for Amethyst. - And don't forget, if Ultra Violet is not your color, Forevermark diamonds go with everything!

  • Style File: Coast to Coast - Business Style

One thing that women can agree on, no matter which coast you're on, is that style in business is important. When you step into a board room or a meeting, the way you feel about your look can spike your confidence and help you preform better. Today's Coast-to-Coast Style File is all about Professional Style and how women on both coasts are rockin' it.

Kelsey | West Coast Style Hunter:

susanI had this picture in my mind of what LA was going to be like before I got here. I was under the impression that I was going to get to the city and be amazed by the street style like I was in Chicago. That hasn't been the case so far though. Maybe it is because I, myself, am now a professional woman but the looks that have been inspiring me mean business.

There is something so casual and comfortable about all of the style here on the West Coast, but the professional women that I have encountered have a way of perfectly combining casual elements, with professional accents to create a sexy style for the office. Forget the "Power Pants Suits" that come to mind when you think of powerful woman in business because being a power house doesn't mean you have to look frumpy. Instead, layers are key. Above the knee patent leather boots, little black dresses with challenging hem lines and accessories like a nice belt or a brilliant scarf to top it all off are signatures of West Coast Professional style.

Pictured is Susan, one of my professors. She is a rockstar when it comes to fashion. Her style has a lot of personality on a day to day basis. She is always able to look so professional, yet edgy and timeless. Here she is pictured wearing a Chanel layered pearl necklace. Layering necklaces is such a fun and easy way to make a big statement with the layers you choose to incorporate.

I have always admired the way that professional women dress, and how it gives them the ability to suggest power and intelligence through what they wear. Being in LA has shown me this is still true and that women on the West Coast are embracing it more than ever. These high fashion business professionals also recognize a killer designer when they see it and value the designer name almost as much as the look itself. It makes me feel a little like I’m watching a real life version of The Devil Wears Prada and reminds me of the cultural differences between the coasts.

Melissa | East Coast Style Hunter:

c600x768I always thought of business attire as conservative power suits and clean lines just like Kelsey. That really isn't the case today though, on either coast. While Hillary Clinton can still rock a pants suit, more women today feel they have more freedom to make a statement with their fashion choices. Attending industry conferences will tell you this is true as you notice that even the presidents of big companies are dressed in fitted pants, killer pumps, a blouse and some powerful jewelry to tie it all together.

I've been researching a lot of what the "trends" are for business attire and oddly enough - many of them (West or East coast) match well with Kelsey's assesment of layers and edgy accents.

Some fun things I have noticed is mixing and matching prints, having fun with colors, and not being afraid to own the style! I personally, have NO problem with this. I tend to live in my own world when it comes to fashion. Sometimes I wear things and think, "does this match?" Other times I just like something so much that even if it isn't in fashion anymore, I MAKE it in fashion - but let's be honest, the 70's and 80's are coming back into style. So, I'm not too far off.

I think I have to agree with Kelsey that the biggest difference in the Coast-to-Coast style of business women is the emphasis on desigerns. While East Coast girls appreciate designers too, we are not in the "hot bed" of new designers like West Coast girls are. When you get this far into the Northeast, New York City is the closest place that hot new designers are trying to stand out and get noticed. Because of that, we notice style based on how it makes us feel, not based on who the designer is. I think that gives East Coast women a unique opportunity to be their own stylists and try things out just to see if they work.

  • Day's Jewelers and Responsible Jewellery Council

Our customers have become increasingly concerned about where our products are sourced. They want to be assured that our diamonds are not used to fund terrorism or to overthrow legitimate governments. They want to know chemicals used to refine the gold in our jewelry are disposed of properly so the environment is not harmed by production. They want to be certain that slavery and child labor practices are never employed to manufacture our jewelry.

responsible-jewelry-councilEnsuring that our products have been responsibly sourced is a priority for the Day's team. Identifying the source of gold and gemstones is very difficult because the majority of the raw products we use to build our jewelry come from other countries. In 2005, the Responsible Jewellery Council was formed in London .

The RJC mission is “To advance responsible, ethical, social and environmental practices, which respect human rights, throughout the diamond and gold jewelry supply chain, from mine to retail.” RJC members include mining companies, jewelry manufacturers, gemstone cutters, and retail jewelers from across the globe.

I'm proud to say that Day's Jewelers was among the first retail jewelers in America to become a member of RJC. Each member must submit to a certification process by a 3rd party auditor to ensure compliance with stringent RJC standards of excellence. Day's passed! We are now one of the few jewelers in America to be certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, member number 0000 0139. We are also 1 of only 2 independent jewelers in the US that have been certified.
