  • Amethyst: 2018 Color of the Year

This February let's channel the late musical icon, Prince, and celebrate Purple Rain! Purple "Reign", that is! Per Pantone, the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, and here at Day's Jewelers we are ready to "rock" the color purple. Of course, there is no greater month to for us to embrace Ultra Violet than February when birthstone Amethyst dominates the jewelry world.

If you haven't already, very soon you will be seeing Ultra Violet everywhere. From furniture to hair color, candy packaging to cosmetics, clothing to vehicles, so I'm blogging to remind you to accessorize 2018 with amethyst!

As part of the Quartz family, amethyst is abundant, low maintenance, durable, affordable, and a fabulous way to show off a highly fashionable jeweled look for a great price. One of my favorite ways to show off amethyst is by stacking Ed Levin handmade sterling silver bangles featuring our favorite purple gem!

Tales have been told that supernatural powers have been linked to amethyst. For centuries, amethyst had been believed to heal and protect people from illnesses. Many even believed drinking alcoholic beverages served in amethyst cups would prevent drunkenness. While today we have modern medicine on our side, amethyst is still considered to be a healer of the body and soul through energy according to many who practice alternative medicine. Additionally, many millennials wear not only amethyst, but other Quartz crystals as well, for mental, physical, and spiritual intervention in their daily lives. Our new silver line, T. Jazelle, brings that trend to the our reality with The Cleo Collection, displaying singular cylindrical crystals on a 36 inch chain; and expansion bracelets with polished beads made out of genuine gemstones accessorized with a single silver charm.

Guest Fashionista, Morgan Bouchard, formerly of the Topsham Day's Jewelers, was kind enough to put together outfit pairings featuring Ultra Violet for your style inspiration. To enhance these looks, come try on this east-to-west oriented oval amethyst and diamond necklace set in white gold on an 18 inch chain. Of course, you will also need to try on the matching pair of earrings where the oval amethyst are oriented North-to-South. Top off the jeweled pairing by wearing this ESTATE oval amethyst ring set in 14k white gold. You'll want to act fast on the ring, it's bold, beautiful, and a great big look - but we only have ONE in company and it's the only one we will ever have!

So there you have it. Amethyst, the color of royalty, is the reigning "Prince" of 2018 thanks to Pantone and the color Ultra Violet. With Valentine's Day less than 2 weeks away, make sure to keep on trend by shopping for Amethyst. - And don't forget, if Ultra Violet is not your color, Forevermark diamonds go with everything!

  • Everyday Elegance in Swarovski

I admire our merchandise team for their strict criteria; pieces are picked with environmental and ethical concerns in mind, whether or not they can last a lifetime (in most cases many lifetimes) and their quality.

Swarovski is a designer that matches this criteria with some of our more obtainable pieces in both everyday fashion and elegant statements. We can get behind that.

  • Style File: JCK Vegas, Kathy Corey

kc-studio-best-smKathy Corey, VP Merchandising / Owner, Day's Jewelers:

Clearly, Day’s Jewelers was well represented at JCK Las Vegas, the largest fine jewelry exhibition trade show in the US, when 12 of us explored the 4000 jewelry exhibits and attended dozens of educational programs at the Mandalay Bay Hotel Convention Center.

As VP of Merchandising, what gets my heart palpitating is the unveiling of new jewelry design concepts and experiencing the unique and beautiful jewelry creations.

"So what’s new and exciting?” you ask.  America is finally moving beyond the recession, consumer confidence is improving, so there was LOTS of new designs this year!

jerkt3493_1Gold is Back! The price of gold has stabilized.  Consumers become accustomed to what gold jewelry now costs and gold jewelry is the new Cache in the fine fashion jewelry world. Larger but feminine drop earrings with open work, link chains of various lengths that offer layered look, bangles and cuffs, were among the hits at the show.  Today’s fashion conscious woman is comfortable with wearing several pieces around her neck and on her wrist, as an expression of herself.

jpdms0621_1_1Color is Crazy! Large and bold is the word.  Whether in rings, earrings, necklaces or bracelets, the world of colored gemstones has re-emerged.  Again, the layering effect is hot.  Long 36” neck chains with stationary colored gemstones, layered with a large gemstone centerpiece necklace, makes a great fashion statement.  This really gives the wearer a chance to represent their own personality through their jewelry picks. Vintage designs with colored gemstones is also very chic, especially when accented with colored diamonds, intricate gold scroll work and some with rose gold touches.  Details in workmanship and femininity are very important.

images_(3)Express Yourself!  Personalized jewelry is very HOT.  Today’s consumer wants to tell the world what her world is like.  Stacking bracelets with personalized charms or discs and layered necklaces with coin holder “keepers” that incorporate interchanging discs or charms.  Today, the female consumer is not interested in holding back – minimalistic designs are paired with bolder and longer lengths.  Everything’s okay and anything goes when it comes to expressing who you are, with the jewelry you wear.

We are so happy with what we found at JCK and we can't wait to share it with you. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated on our new arrivals!

  • Style File: Diamond Earrings and Birkenstocks

Here in New England we're no stranger to the Birkenstock sandal. My grandmother has been rocking this trend for as long as I can remember; and this year I am happy to say Grandma's got style!

images_(2)1It's true, the Birkenstock inspired sandal is making a major comeback for Summer 2014. I first noticed this when I went to Venice beach for a day. I saw a woman wearing a pair of black sandals that were almost identical to the Birkenstock sandal that was created over 100 years ago (ps: Day's is 100 this year). Can you believe it? The Birkenstock was created in 1897, but we're not sick of it yet!

After seeing this look alike sandal at Venice beach I started noticing it everywhere! Not only are other labels creating their own version of the timeless sandal, but the original company is still going strong with new styles and colors.

deqt0115_1_1The best part about classic items, like a pair of Birkenstocks or a strand of pearls, is that they look great with nearly every outfit, and they never lose their value or style. Trends come and go in cycles and investing in timeless, classic pieces is a great way to ensure that you get your money's worth, and that the item will be fashionable for more than one season.

My favorite timeless accessories are my LL Bean boots and my diamond stud earrings!

Check out this article that Refinery 29 posted about the return of the Birkenstock sandal too!

  • Style File: Coast to Coast - Fashion Week

lafashionweekgatsby_girlIt’s no secret that the fashion capital of the America is New York, but in March, LA had their own "Fashion Week" celebration. On Friday, hundreds of people gathered around the outdoor lounge at the W Hotel in Hollywood to celebrate the kickoff of LA fashion week with a runway show featuring two incredible designers. I had the honor of being able to volunteer at this event which gave me exclusive front row access to all the looks!

The runway show was amazing, but seeing the style of the attendees was a sight in itself. Since being here I have already discovered that Hollywood fashion is nothing like the prim and proper style you see in New York. The people of Los Angeles are certainly more experimental and creative with their fashion choices.

Guests used this event as an opportunity to express their own personal style on the red carpet. Some people fully encompassed all of the colors of spring, bright blues and yellows, pastel blazers, and hats galore! Others came dressed in gowns. Miss. Hollywood attended, dressed in her sash and crown. My favorite look of the night was a woman who was fully embracing a Gatsby inspired look complete with a long cigarette holder. Being a part of this event was certainly a unique experience, as well as a reminder that style is a completely personal. It was an inspiring thing to see people dare to be different!

Well I wasn't at fashion week (in LA or other wise), but I like to think I know fashion when I see it!  I try to stay on top of things, and have an addiction with shopping when all the new lines come out. I also have some amazing sisters with some serious fashion sense, so I'm in 'the know' -- even up here in Maine! But, I agree with favorite looks are always those of the people not afraid to go for it!

marta-krupa-joanna-krupa-attend-the-style-fashion-week-la-2014-4I know we can't all be on the runway or red carpet (even though some of us would love to be - this girl right here) but, we all can make our own fashion statements based on what we see on the runways. It's super easy to take a style from the runway and make it into your own, especially with Pinterest - don't believe me? I grabbed a Spring fashion show outfit and did about 10 minutes worth of searching on Pinterest and here you go...from "Runway" to "Your Way!" A cute pink pastel knit dress, pastel green clutch, yellow nails, and a beatiful Citizen watch -- there you have it: As we mentioned last week in Style File: Spring Trends - baby blue, peep toe booties, hats, and clutches are this Spring's "do's" with accesories and clothing. You can see in this photo from the red carpet, the Krupa sisters have it right, a beautiful pastel pink gown and "bam" - stylish clutch that would stand out for days! Not to mention the beautiful statement piece necklace Marta is wearing!

Fun right? And personally, I like the "Your Way" a little more. Here's a few pieces from Day's that are "Runway" to "Your Way" ready! While we can't dress you from head to toe, we can make you sparkle!

  • Style File: Scarves and Jewelry, Oh My!

1239704_561780586838_127813732_nThis style file is going to be quick and simple today...the title says it all "scarves and jewelry - oh, my!"

For those that know me I am a scarf-aholic. Honestly, I have an addiction that might cause me to go to meetings soon. Let’s put it this way, one of my bucket list items is to own 200 scarves, yes that’s a real goal (currently I have about 40, clearly more than enough, but a girl has to collect something!).

So, the fun thing about scarves is that you can dress up or down any outfit with them. You can have so much fun with scarves: add color, add patterns, add it for a new look to an old outfit. Well, like scarves, jewelry is an accessory to add color, patterns or freshen up a new look! Ah…you didn’t think about it that way did you? No one said you had to buy a $1000 ring (you certainly can if you'd like), but if you have a cute new outfit, you can surely treat yourself to a $50-$100 ring (or even earrings) for it!

Because scarves have become such a large part of fashion, earrings are now bigger, longer and more colorful. Rings are also becoming bigger. You'll see more cocktail type rings are showing up on the runways. This is so jewelry can still stand out against the scarves (ok, that's not the only reason, but it works).

What does that mean for you? It means we can have fun with scarves, earrings and rings - oh my! And, guess what, I put together some fun pieces that would work with any scarf look...I got your back.

See quick and simple...this was more like a Style File tip - scarves = big earrings and rings!

Oh and the picture is my version of me saying, "scarves and jewelry - oh my!" ...but also showcasing a scarf with big hoop earrings wonderfully!

    Until next monday.
