  • How you could be unintentionally killing your jewelry...

Like a new car, new jewelry eventually requires maintenance. This isn’t a suggestion, it’s a fact. When you love your jewelry, you wear it (as you should). When you wear it, you damage it. This fact is not so much about quality craftsmanship as it is about wear and tear.

When you drive thousands of miles on your car, it is not the car’s fault the tires need to be replaced. The same concept can (and should) be applied to jewelry. Under elements of normal wear and tear your metals should last you the following number of years without requiring prong or shank maintenance.

    1. Yellow Gold – 5 Years
    2. White Gold – 8 Years
    3. Platinum – 20 Years

This is under normal wear and tear. Below, I have created a list of activities that unintentionally kills jewelry. If you want to maximize the life of your jewelry and delay repair work as long as possible, please be (unofficially) advised to remove your jewelry when doing the following:

    1)      Cleaning:  Many cleaning chemicals contain chlorine – which is terribly harmful to most metals by causing porosity and weakening prongs and shanks. Even all-natural cleaning agents can do damage to jewelry. While they may not necessarily harm metal, they can damage most gemstones that have much softer compositional properties than diamonds. No, this does not exempt you from performing household chores! When it is time to scrub and disinfect your home, remove the jewelry on your hands first! Unlike your skin, jewelry does not heal and regenerate after chemical exposure.

    2)      Swimming: Just like with cleaning, more leisurely activities like, a soak in the hot tub or a quick swim before dinner, will damage your jewelry because of the chemical exposure.

-Furthermore, when you swim (even in fresh or salt water) your hands are exposed to cooler temperatures. When your hands are cold your fingers constrict, when your fingers constrict your rings become loose fitting, when your rings are loose they fall off!

    3)      Yard Work: We have all had blisters from raking, weeding, chopping, stacking, digging, and/or harvesting. Am I right? We have all seen what yard work does to our hands (and muscles!), imagine what it is doing to your jewelry on a microscopic level. Over time, you will do damage that will bring your ring to our repair shop. May it be a broken prong, a chipped stone, or a missing stone, you will need it repaired, and it will cost you money.

    4)      Hiking: One of my best friend’s engagement ring was purchased from me. A month after the proposal, she texted me saying her platinum was terribly scratched (and it was!).

The conversation went something like this:

Her: “You said platinum was durable.”

Me: “You climbed a mountain with your ring on.”

Need I say more? (Sorry, Karis. I use your active lifestyle as an example on a regular basis.)

    5)      Sleeping: This is a big one. The biggest, really. Folks, take your jewelry off before bed. You’re not as delicate of a sleeper as you think you are.

You may think you sleep like this:

But you really sleep like this:

When you toss and turn you are susceptible of snagging prongs in your blankets and stretching/tangling your chains. There is only so much of this that your jewelry can take.

Eventually, something is going to give and it is going to either need repair or replacement.

    6)      Gym: Kudos to all of you who work out. Really, you put my couch-potato self to shame.  I never damage my jewelry sitting on the couch. Neither will you. You will, however, damage your jewelry at the gym. Whether you are pumping iron, practicing your left JAB, or using the rowing machine (all things, I have never done in my life) you are putting serious strain on your rings. Those of you wearing rings with stones are at the most risk. FYI: Activity that causes your ring to be pressed into your hand or against something else, even if it’s only at the bottom, will bend your ring. It may not be evident right away, but when your ring bends it effects the structural integrity of the tension holding your gemstones in. They will become loose and gold work will be required to strengthen your ring again. You may even chip your stones, requiring replacement. Yes, diamonds are the least likely to chip, but they can and will if under significant strain or impact.

    7)      Carrying heavy loads: If you’re like me, you hate making two trips out to the car to bring in groceries. To maximize your efficiency, I’m sure you carry all 17 bags and a gallon of milk into the house in one trip. This will bend your ring and snag prongs catastrophically. Reread the FYI from point #6.

Jewelry is precious, delicate and valuable. While it deserves to be shown off, it deserves to be treated carefully to maximize its beauty and longevity. Please remove your jewelry before engaging in the activities listed above – they are the most frequent culprits of jewelry damage!

The extra facets, requiring additional time, craftsmanship, and expertise, help to prevent light from “leaking” out of the back of the diamond. These strategic cuts maximize the amount of light that is returned to the viewer making it visibly brighter.

Popular for its overall strength and its reflective qualities.  Omega chain is made up of metal links assembled on a wire or woven mesh that form a tube. ROPE CHAIN:  Rows of metal links are woven for this type of chain creating the appearance of a two strand rope.  The join of each link is like a tiny hinge, meaning this style is not as flexible or liquid-like as some others.

SHADBELLY CHAIN:  Its construction is composed of points that are similar to shadbelly points used to enhance riding jackets worn by equestrians. The necklace's links are woven closely together to provide strength as well as elegance.

SINGAPORE CHAIN:  Flat diamond cut chain links are woven together to form a diamond shape.  These diamond shaped links are then woven together, creating the Singapore chain.  It is eye catching as it reflects light from different angles.  The chain also has a natural curve, created by the weaving process, that is pleasing to the eye.

SNAKE CHAIN:  Crafted of smooth, round metal plates or bands,  the chain has a curve at the mid-point of each link.  The links are then joined to create a continual flexible tube reminiscent of a snake skin due to a slight zigzag pattern.

kc-studio-best-smKathy Corey, VP Merchandising / Owner, Day's Jewelers:

Clearly, Day’s Jewelers was well represented at JCK Las Vegas, the largest fine jewelry exhibition trade show in the US, when 12 of us explored the 4000 jewelry exhibits and attended dozens of educational programs at the Mandalay Bay Hotel Convention Center.

As VP of Merchandising, what gets my heart palpitating is the unveiling of new jewelry design concepts and experiencing the unique and beautiful jewelry creations.

"So what’s new and exciting?” you ask.  America is finally moving beyond the recession, consumer confidence is improving, so there was LOTS of new designs this year!

jerkt3493_1Gold is Back! The price of gold has stabilized.  Consumers become accustomed to what gold jewelry now costs and gold jewelry is the new Cache in the fine fashion jewelry world. Larger but feminine drop earrings with open work, link chains of various lengths that offer layered look, bangles and cuffs, were among the hits at the show.  Today’s fashion conscious woman is comfortable with wearing several pieces around her neck and on her wrist, as an expression of herself.

jpdms0621_1_1Color is Crazy! Large and bold is the word.  Whether in rings, earrings, necklaces or bracelets, the world of colored gemstones has re-emerged.  Again, the layering effect is hot.  Long 36” neck chains with stationary colored gemstones, layered with a large gemstone centerpiece necklace, makes a great fashion statement.  This really gives the wearer a chance to represent their own personality through their jewelry picks. Vintage designs with colored gemstones is also very chic, especially when accented with colored diamonds, intricate gold scroll work and some with rose gold touches.  Details in workmanship and femininity are very important.

images_(3)Express Yourself!  Personalized jewelry is very HOT.  Today’s consumer wants to tell the world what her world is like.  Stacking bracelets with personalized charms or discs and layered necklaces with coin holder “keepers” that incorporate interchanging discs or charms.  Today, the female consumer is not interested in holding back – minimalistic designs are paired with bolder and longer lengths.  Everything’s okay and anything goes when it comes to expressing who you are, with the jewelry you wear.

We are so happy with what we found at JCK and we can't wait to share it with you. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated on our new arrivals!

    Day's Jewelers, Auburn

The jewelry show in Vegas was amazing! Walking onto the show floor was jaw dropping and breathtaking all at the same time. There were so many things to see and so many new jewelry trends coming out that I will narrow it down to the things that really “wowed” me.

Ritani is working on a program that allows the customer to custom design a ring and then see what it will look like before they purchase it. It allows the customer to have a better idea of what their vision will actually look like. When you select a ring, the image is uploaded onto the iPads we have in store. The customer can then change the metal color, finger size and center stone shape. Once the customer decides on a shape and carat weight, the program adjusts the ring to accommodate what was picked. Once the ring is laid out, the customer can then see what the ring will look like on the hand of the receiver. They can pick the hand, skin tone and size of the ring. It is amazing the technology that is coming out to help make the engagement ring purchase that much easier!

clare_largespencers-red-paisley-high-low-skirt-black-embroidered-topThe newest things that we saw in necklaces were bars. What these are, are blank bars, some even had diamonds, that are horizontal on a chain. The wearer can either wear it blank or have the bar engraved (these were available in silver and all colors of gold). We discovered that the bar style pendants became popular when the girl chosen to be on the Bachelorette wore hers during the show. Another hot style is the Scrabble pendant. It is a Scrabble chip that has an initial on it. One of the actresses from Pretty Little Liars was given one on the show and the style took off from there.

photo_1Some hot new rings include the “H” (or “I”) and the double loop. The rings are thin bars that either loop together or are held together by another bar. They can be worn separate or together depending on ones preference. These rings also come in multiples. They have the design of a thin bangle bracelet but are worn on the fingers.

Pearls are starting to change as well. Honora is creating a Football line; where their bracelets match the color of your favorite Football team. This makes gift giving more fun for men! The bigger, bolder designs of rings and the long diamond by the yard looks are those that are still desired.

The Origami Owl necklaces that people are starting to wear are becoming a thing of fashion. A new line called "Four Keeps" is personalized jewellery that is very similar to that of Origami Owl. It has a thin metal chain and many lockets to choose from, as well as the removable back plates that allow you to create different looks by adding charms. This is a great compliment to a Chamilia bracelet. Chamilia also has some great new beads that they will be releasing for the fall and Christmas, but nothing that I can spoil here!

The show and all the vendors were so amazing and I am so excited for the upcoming season. It would have been great to have more time with each vendor, but the three days I had opened my eyes to a whole new world of jewelry. If you can think it, they can make it.

  • Style File: Coast to Coast - Best Actress Inspired Style

actress_inspired_kelseyKelsey and I have a love of all things fashion and are so excited to share it with you all. This week we are talking about actress inspired style! So fun. It's amazing what you can do with pinterest, the Oscars, and your own "style" to come up with some amazing outfits!

oscars_2014_red_carpet_arrivals_-_lupita_nyongoIt’s been a couple weeks since the Academy Awards took place here in Los Angeles, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the tabloids and every fashion blog or magazine by the way they are still obsessing over some of the top looks at the 2014 Oscars.

The real winner of the night was quite clearly Lupita Nyong’o who took home the Oscar for Best Actress. She was a vision of beauty in her ice blue Prada gown. I was so in love with the cut of this gown as well as the color, everything about this look was really so elegant and uplifting! Everyone needs a little big of pretty in their life, which is why I put together my own version of Lupita’s A+ look.

Lets face it, not many of us will be invited onto the red carpet any time soon, but we can get in the mood for spring with our own Lupita inspired look. Maxi skirts are so easy to come by now. They are girly and most of all they are comfortable! Paired with a simple tank or t-shirt and you have a look that is fit for a star.

actress_insprired_melissaI have to agree that she looked amazing! And now I've seen people with this dress (or similar too) on the red carpet, run ways, and now in bridal magazines as the look for Spring and Summer wedding gowns.

However, I'm with you Kelsey, we can make this glam look into something fun and flirty with a maxi and tank. The best part is you can have this look for less than a Prada dress, and dress it up or down with the right accessories.

Obviously, I am going to throw a scarf on with this look just because that's my signature piece, but you can also add a long necklace, layered necklaces, or leave a bear neck and add attention to your wrists and ears like Lupita did with some beautiful gold pieces.

    Inspired Jewelry:

Kelsey and I pulled together two different looks using the same maxi skirt -- inspired by Lupita's ice blue Prada gown. We've also put together a collection of beautiful gold jewelry that will pop with any outfit!

  • Gold - The Mysterious Metal

When it comes out of the ground, gold is a deep, rich yellow color. Have you ever wondered why some gold jewelry is white? Gold is most always mixed with other metals called alloys. In fact, 14 karat gold is 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts other metals or only 58.5% pure. 18 karat is 75% pure gold.

    There are three reasons why gold is alloyed with other metals;

    1. Gold in its purest form is very soft and not practical for everyday wear. Metals are mixed with the gold for strength and durability.
    2. Alloy metals will change the color of gold. When nickel and zinc are used, the result is white gold. Copper alloy will produce pink or rose gold. A predominately silver mix will yield green gold.
    3. Since the alloy metals are less rare and valuable than gold, price of the final product is reduced making jewelry more affordable.

The U.S. Federal trade commission dictates that jewelry must be at least 10 karat (47%) to be called gold. In Great Britain, it is common to find 9 karat gold, while Middle Eastern society prefers 22 karat.

A word of caution; Gold jewelry should not be worn in a pool or hot tub as chlorine will deteriorate most alloys resulting in permanent damage.

Gold jewelry is quite easy to keep clean. Simply add a touch of dish soap with water and use an old toothbrush to get at tough to reach places under the stones. To bring back the original lustre use a specially treated cloth to remove oxidation. Bring your jewelry into Day’s and we’d be happy to professionally clean and inspect for you at no charge.
