  • Amethyst: 2018 Color of the Year

This February let's channel the late musical icon, Prince, and celebrate Purple Rain! Purple "Reign", that is! Per Pantone, the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, and here at Day's Jewelers we are ready to "rock" the color purple. Of course, there is no greater month to for us to embrace Ultra Violet than February when birthstone Amethyst dominates the jewelry world.

If you haven't already, very soon you will be seeing Ultra Violet everywhere. From furniture to hair color, candy packaging to cosmetics, clothing to vehicles, so I'm blogging to remind you to accessorize 2018 with amethyst!

As part of the Quartz family, amethyst is abundant, low maintenance, durable, affordable, and a fabulous way to show off a highly fashionable jeweled look for a great price. One of my favorite ways to show off amethyst is by stacking Ed Levin handmade sterling silver bangles featuring our favorite purple gem!

Tales have been told that supernatural powers have been linked to amethyst. For centuries, amethyst had been believed to heal and protect people from illnesses. Many even believed drinking alcoholic beverages served in amethyst cups would prevent drunkenness. While today we have modern medicine on our side, amethyst is still considered to be a healer of the body and soul through energy according to many who practice alternative medicine. Additionally, many millennials wear not only amethyst, but other Quartz crystals as well, for mental, physical, and spiritual intervention in their daily lives. Our new silver line, T. Jazelle, brings that trend to the our reality with The Cleo Collection, displaying singular cylindrical crystals on a 36 inch chain; and expansion bracelets with polished beads made out of genuine gemstones accessorized with a single silver charm.

Guest Fashionista, Morgan Bouchard, formerly of the Topsham Day's Jewelers, was kind enough to put together outfit pairings featuring Ultra Violet for your style inspiration. To enhance these looks, come try on this east-to-west oriented oval amethyst and diamond necklace set in white gold on an 18 inch chain. Of course, you will also need to try on the matching pair of earrings where the oval amethyst are oriented North-to-South. Top off the jeweled pairing by wearing this ESTATE oval amethyst ring set in 14k white gold. You'll want to act fast on the ring, it's bold, beautiful, and a great big look - but we only have ONE in company and it's the only one we will ever have!

So there you have it. Amethyst, the color of royalty, is the reigning "Prince" of 2018 thanks to Pantone and the color Ultra Violet. With Valentine's Day less than 2 weeks away, make sure to keep on trend by shopping for Amethyst. - And don't forget, if Ultra Violet is not your color, Forevermark diamonds go with everything!

  • Time and Eternity Jewelry for Mother's Day

Let Mom know you'll love her for all of Time and Eternity! Through the twists and turns of motherhood, interwoven rings represent her love. The diamond at the center, like Mom, holds everything together because to Mom: family is everything. Each piece in our Time and Eternity Collection features a Northern Star diamond.
Time and Eternity Collection Shop Button
What makes a Northern Star diamond so special?
Every Northern Star diamond has 90 facets, 32 more than a traditional diamond. The extra facets, requiring additional time, craftsmanship, and expertise, help to prevent light from “leaking” out of the back of the diamond. These strategic cuts maximize the amount of light that is returned to the viewer making it visibly brighter.
Show Mom how special she is with a Time & Eternity piece of jewelry featuring a beautiful Northern Star diamond.

  • Choosing the Right Gift for Your Relationship

Receiving gifts is something that most people love, I know I do. For me the gifts that have the most meaning are the ones that are given with great sentiment. The ones that were thought about and perfectly planned and mean the world only to the person receiving it. Very commonly jewelry becomes a staple gift to give women. At this point in my current relationship, jewelry purchases are not a gift I am ready to receive.

amanda_erickI am a lover of jewelry; I have been growing my collection for at least 20 years. What I love most about the jewelry that I have is that my collection is unlike any other. My favorite piece is a necklace strand of vintage beads found at an antique store by my mother. I am more interested in finding jewelry that perfectly complements my personality and can be worn to express my identity.

Buying jewelry for a significant other can often be tough, it has to be the right gift for you as a couple, and given at the right time.  Jewelry is beautiful because it can have such powerful meaning behind it. Many feel that buying a piece of jewelry for a loved one is a big commitment.  As wonderful as it is to express your love and admiration, giving jewelry can sometimes feel overwhelming. There is no timeline on how a relationship should grow, but as a couple you know when that special feeling happens. Your heart knows when it feels right to make that commitment and buy jewelry, and at that time, you’ll know what to purchase.

Personally I haven’t received jewelry as a gift yet because in my relationship we know we’re not ready for that. My boyfriend, Erick, is kind of amazing! Erick knows that my jewelry defines my identity. I’m a pretty unique woman and I express my individuality through the unique pieces in my collection. This makes it really hard to buy jewelry for me. We both know that for now, I have the jewelry buying under control on my own.

Our relationship is unique, adventurous and wonderful. We like to make sure that the gifts we give each other convey that. This year, what he gave me for Christmas, my Birthday and Valentine’s Day was a gift that surpassed my expectations. I was surprised with a beautiful bouquet of red and white flowers on Christmas with an envelope tucked inside inscribed, “Mandy”. Inside the envelope I found a gift certificate to go skydiving and a hotel reservation for Memorial Day Weekend. I was thrilled! Going skydiving was something I had always wanted to do, but could never justify spending the money on.

This gift was perfect for our relationship at the time. I can honestly say, going skydiving was the best experience of my life.  My dad and brother-in-law also ended up joining me on this ride. The memory of going will always bring me happiness. None of this would have been possible without the thoughtfulness of Erick. I plan on keeping him around!

With any couple, gifts are a way to create memories and celebrate love.  Sometimes jewelry isn’t the right gift, but when it is jewelry can say so much.  Whether the gift is a lighthouse charm as a reminder of your first date or a diamond engagement ring to say, I love you. Gifts express the foundation of your relationship. Always remember to keep your relationship about you and do what feels right. Keep in mind that sometimes jewelry is a gift best purchased by you, for you!

  • Making Memories: The True Value of Jewelry

juggling_motherhood_and_workEntering into the world of motherhood is the greatest blessing anyone could ever have. That being said, it is also an enormous challenge at the same time.  An amazing miracle is born into this world and you are responsible for his/her safety, health, education and giving an unending supply of love and encouragement to their rapidly developing personas. Trying to balance the responsibilities parenthood bestows upon us in combination with keeping up on household duties and a full time job can be a never ending struggle.

With the birth of my second child, I was beginning to feel the strain of prioritizing my life and my need to balance my wants and desires with the needs of my family.  I had made the decision to return to the job that I love while also trying to honor all of the commitments I had made to my family. Fortunately, my workplace is like my second family but even with that said my first day back at work after my daughter was born was difficult.  I arrived to work after a hurried and frantic struggle to get my daughter dressed and dropped off at daycare for the first day in order to make it to work on time.  The drop off was difficult as my daughter faced her first day in the care of someone other than her mommy and it was my first day without her by my side as well.  After leaving her with her new caregiver, I headed off to work teary eyed and worried about what the day held for both her and I.

Arriving at work was a pick me up with all of my work family there to greet me and welcome me dete0021_1_1back with open arms.  As I walked out back to my office I noticed a Day's blue box waiting for me at my desk.  I opened it to find a beautiful pair of sparkling diamond stud earrings with a note from my husband wishing me a great first day back at work.  The diamond earrings are incredible. l love them and wear them every day. Often times I will get compliments on them while I am out and about and I always beam with happiness not only because of the beauty of them but of what they represent.  These earrings are a symbol of the accomplishments I have made in my life, most important of all my beautiful children. The earrings remind me of my quest to find balance in my life and that my husband appreciates all my efforts in doing so.  I look forward to being able to hand down these diamond earrings to my daughter one day as a symbol of how proud I will be of her successes in life.

The value in a piece of jewelry is not that of the size of its stones or the weight of its metal.  Instead, it is the memorable moment the jewelry has captured or created that makes it invaluable.

  • Right Hand Ring, the Freedom Ring

photoRecently, a customer came in to see me to help her design a new ring. She brought in a loose stone from a ring given to her from a previous relationship and her mom’s wedding band. She was interested in using these items in her new ring in some way. As we talked, she shared with me some major life events from the past year including the loss of a loved one, an illness and a major job promotion. The ring she was looking for would be worn on her right hand and for her, would be a symbol of the newest chapter in her “beautiful, healthy, happy life.”

Traditionally, jewelry has been used as a way to mark major life events. Perhaps the most well recognized symbol of significance is the wedding ring; the unbroken circle which many cultures understand as representative of eternal love. The wedding ring has always been a universally understood symbol that carries meaning and respect. But what if you’re not married? On a daily basis we work with customers who are looking to commemorate their independence or maybe even a new chapter in their lives. Why not wear a ring as a symbol of wholeness or completeness, not necessarily in a couple, but with one’s self? In a ring we see the circular pattern of life. It is faithful to continue around and around like the daily repetition of our lives. The “Freedom Ring” or “Right Hand Ring” is a piece of jewelry to represent and celebrate a life-changing occasion, or a new outlook on life.

A freedom ring doesn’t have to be a diamond solitaire, like an engagement ring. It can be a personal piece of jewelry that you purchase or design with the statement of freedom in mind. Maybe turn an unworn wedding ring into a right hand ring or melt down an old wedding band and re-design it into a brand new ring to signify a new life. A refreshing way to repurpose jewelry! The choice of the ring and how you wear it is personal. Use the ring as a reminder of the positive aspects of living independently, as a symbol of a new and brighter future.

Celebrate your life, your qualities, YOU! This is perhaps the most empowering experience a person can have. Embrace your freedom and independence, your ambitions, dreams and desires and use it to enrich your life.

  • A Heartless Valentine's Day?

(kgrhqf,qke-yokniicbptvpflmn~~60_35Yes, you read that right, a heartless Valentine's Day. Do you ever get tired of seeing hearts this time of year? They are in windows and all through the stores, candy changes over to represent "love and hearts," even clothing stores add a whole line of heart shirts and sweaters for Valentine's Day.

We know that hearts can get old so we put together a collection of items for Valentine's Day that represent love the same way that a heart does, without the heart. So what exactly symbolizes love that doesn't require a heart? How about knots, infinitysymbols, and circles. These all have the same meaning as a heart: unending, strong, limitless, love.

dpcl1870_1You might be thinking we're crazy. Maybe we are. But we know a few things:

    1. Women want jewelry for Valentine's Day
    2. Most men get overwhelmed by all the pink, hearts, and flowers
    3. Love can be represented in many ways
Valentine's Day is Thursday, February 14th (all day long). As always, if you need help picking out the perfect gift, just ask! Or check out our Gift Guide.

Be sure to check out our board of our favorite "Heartless Love" items.

  • 5 Ways to Say "I Love You"

Je t'aime, Te amo, Koselmol (Go-zell-mull), Ich liebe dich...I love you.

We picked out a few items that are a great way to say "I love you." Many of the items that we feature have a story behind them. Day's Jewelers believes jewelry is a sentimental gift, one that has the ability to be an heirloom within your family for generations to follow; a piece that will create a story of its own between mother and daughter, or grandmother and granddaughter.

    Everlon Love Knot Collection
: The Everlon Diamond Knot Collection offers simple, timeless and elegant designs. The Everlon collection features the Hercules knot, the ancient symbol of strength that represents the unbreakable bond of love.

comu_dste0561_blog2012Forevermark Diamond Collection: Forevermark diamonds are genuine, untreated and natural. Their beauty is unleashed by the world's finest craftsmen using skill and artistry.  Each Forevermark diamond comes with a promise, inscribed at its very heart.

Circle Collection: Circles are the symbols of unending love. Circles commonly represent unity and wholeness. Without beginning or end, without sides or corners, the circle is also associated with the number one.

Heart Collection: Hearts are a symbol for love, charity, joy and compassion. A heart with an arrow through it represents directed energy, flow, or penetration (a relationship with Cupid, god of love).

Infinity Collection: Infinity refers to something without any limit, as in an endless love. The English word infinity derives from Latin infinitas, which translated is "unboundedness," itself derived from the Greek word apeiros, meaning "endless." But you probably knew that.

This Valentine's Day, tell her you love her in the way that fits your love. Valentine's is Thursday, February 14th (just a friendly reminder). We also know that women don't want chocolate, flowers and gift cards, they want something from the heart (or knot, or circle).

  • Add a Little Charm, for Mother's Day

ngcms0627Every mom has a story. We can all spend hours talking about memories, favorite recipes, trips we took with our moms. What if you took all those memories, created a story and gave that to her this Mother's Day? You can... with a Rembrandt Charm Bracelet.

ngcs0091Do you remember your first dance recital? She was in the front row wasn't she; camera in hand, tears rolling down her eyes. How about the first day of school or when you graduated. Her baby was growing up. These are easy to put into a store with a Rembrandt Charm bracelet. Be creative. Be mushy! It's Mother's Day, you can do whatever you want to show her you love her.

    How to create Her Story:

    1) Pick out the bracelet you like (available in sterling silver or gold)
    2) Pick out the charm(s) you would like on the bracelet (available in sterling silver or gold)
    3) Place your order online or go to your local Day's store
    4) We will put the charms on the bracelet for you, at no additional charge, or if you want you can - it's simple - the charm has a jump ring that can be opened and closed with pliers, so you can put the charms you choose in any pattern you would like.

Here's a great example that Rembrandt Charms put together to showcase what a Mother's Day charm bracelet could look like:

  • 5 Things to Consider when Choosing a Mother’s Day Gift

5 Things to Consider when Choosing a Mother’s Day Gift

    1) Mindset – why you are buying it, not just what

Remember how much your Mom loved those construction paper Mother’s Day cards you made in 3rd grade? The same rule still applies! You should focus more on the “Why” you buy something as much as you focus on the “What.” Remember the “Why” and when you give her the gift she’ll know you mean “Thank you and I Love You."

    2) Stop, look & listen

Before you purchase that necklace, stop! Does she even wear necklaces? Does she own too many necklaces, that she doesn’t wear them all? What has she mentioned she wanted? Was it another necklace?

Sometimes just following those three words will help guide you away from buying a gift that doesn’t communicate your real intent: saying thank you and I love you.

    3) What’s your mom type?

ngpds1399a. The working mom: She works and she plays, but she always has time for her family. Your mom is a busy woman. With meetings and picking up the dry cleaning and the kids, her days are planned well. This mom needs something durable and timeless - like our Sterling Silver Bangle Bracelet

    b. The domestic mom: She's been there for you every step of the way, and she probably made your bed for you more than you let on. She would appreciate a family oriented piece of jewelry, like this Mother and Child Pendant.

    c. The stylish mom: She stays up with fashion, and you can bet you were a well-dressed kid. Whether she stays at home or has joined the workforce, this mom looks fantastic. If you want to wow Mom with the perfect gift, find her anything designer, like a big, bold Citrine Lorenzo Ring.

    d. The sports mom: Mom loves a good game as much as Dad, and more often she'd rather be playing than watching. For sporty moms like this, find Mother's Day gifts that reflect her favorite teams, sports and players. Does she have a Bead Bracelet? If she does (or doesn't yet!) we have many sport team and sport beads.

    e. The new mom: Motherhood is just beginning for this new mother, and she doesn't want to miss a thing. Help her celebrate with birthstone jewelry and mother and child pendants.

    4) Who you are buying for (wife, mother, child)

    jpdkt0682Consider hobbies, interests and personality.

Buying for the mother of your children is entirely different than buying for your mother.
Yes, they are both women who may share the same likes and dislikes, but they are in different seasons of life.

Still confused as to what to buy to best communicate that you’ve taken note of who she is and care about what she likes? Contact Kathy and Melissa at Day's Jewelers, your personal shoppers. They will find the perfect gift for your mom. Email them at

    5) Memoire

ngers3110Think about something memorable you did with your Mom. Was it a trip or moment in time? Maybe a special place that you and your Mother share? Commemorate this occasion with jewelry. For example, if you have a special memory of being at the ocean together, how about a piece of sea glass jewelry ? Or, if you’re memory is of a trip you took together, why not get her a Chamilia Suit Case Bead or the Cruise Ship Bead?

Still stuck? We have also created a Gift Guide for finding the perfect Mother's Day Gift.
