  • Day’s Jewelers Selected Among Best Places to Work in Maine for a Third Year

Day’s Jewelers was recently named as one of the 2017 Best Places to Work in Maine. The awards program was created in 2006 and is a project of the Society for Human Resource Management - Maine State Council (MESHRM) and Best Companies Group. Partners endorsing the program include: Mainebiz, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and Maine HR Convention.

Kathy, Jeff and Jim Corey, owners of Day’s Jewelers, have truly created a business that makes its employees proud. “Kathy, my brother Jim and I were raised in the St. John Valley in Northern Maine where family is such an important part of the local culture. The three of us, along with my 5 other siblings, worked together in my Mom and Dad’s business, Robert’s Jewelry in Madawaska. Family has always been important to us. As we’ve built Day’s over the years, it was our goal to create a family environment among our staff,” says Jeff Corey.

Kathy Corey thanks her employees for this award which has been claimed in 2014, 2015 and now 2017. “Receiving this award is truly an honor, but mostly it’s a tribute to the 140 employees who work at Day’s.  They are the real heroes.”

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings.

Day’s Jewelers Human Resources Director Kristie Jandreau knows exactly how this award was earned., “It’s because of what we do and, most importantly, why we do it. We are surrounded by beautiful gems, sparkling diamonds, and the latest fashion accessories. We spend our work days in luxurious showrooms with guests looking for that special piece to commemorate an important occasion or symbol of their love. Relationships are formed with our guests that last for many years. Day’s employees enjoy people and building relationships with our guests and with each other. Day’s employees often describe their co-workers as family.”

Other employees agree; Company Photographer and Content Producer, Brian Chick says, “We are given the tools and support to succeed with in-house training and continued education outside of the workplace.” Lindsay Nodden, Assistant Buyer said, “I think the reason why we won best places to work in Maine is because people genuinely enjoy their jobs here.  How could you not, working with beautiful things and amazing people every day!”

Day’s Jewelers will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in Maine awards ceremony on October 10 and will be listed in a special publication by Mainebiz. The final rankings will be announced at the event.

What makes a Northern Star diamond so special?
Every Northern Star diamond has 90 facets, 32 more than a traditional diamond. The extra facets, requiring additional time, craftsmanship, and expertise, help to prevent light from “leaking” out of the back of the diamond. These strategic cuts maximize the amount of light that is returned to the viewer making it visibly brighter.
Show Mom how special she is with a Time & Eternity piece of jewelry featuring a beautiful Northern Star diamond.

Synthetic diamonds, also referred to as lab created diamonds, engineered diamonds or man-made diamonds are artificially produced in a laboratory. Their chemical properties, pure carbon crystal structure, brilliance and hardness are identical to a natural diamond. Unlike natural diamonds, formed in the Earth’s crust billions of years ago, synthetic diamonds are not considered rare because they can be produced in limitless quantities in a matter of weeks. Since their quantities are not finite as with natural diamonds, it is uncertain if their value will remain over time.

Synthetic diamonds were first created by General Electric in 1953. Up until recent years, man-made diamonds could not be created in a quality suitable for jewelry. They were primarily used as abrasives or in industrial tools such as saws and drill bits because of a diamond’s superior hardness. During the past few years, refinements in the diamond manufacturing process have produced increasingly finer quality stones, suitable for use in jewelry.

Synthetic diamonds are now being produced in larger quantities are more readily available in different colors and shapes. Prices of synthetic diamonds range from 20-30 percent below natural diamonds.

Those who sell these diamonds must clearly disclose to the consumer that they are not natural diamonds by labeling them as synthetic diamonds, laboratory grown diamonds, man-made diamonds or created diamonds.

To the human eye, laboratory grown diamonds look identical to a natural diamond. Only specialized instruments are able to identify man-made diamonds. The question as to whether to purchase a synthetic diamond versus a natural diamond is a personal choice. To some, it might be important to own a diamond that was formed naturally, billions of years ago and has stood the test of time. Others may wish to enjoy the beauty and brilliance of a man-made diamond at a reduced cost.

  • A Day’s Jewelers Cliff's of Moher Proposal

    Day's Jewelers Proposal Story:

Hi my nameimage2 is Michelle Devereux. My fiancé Ryan Sylvain proposed to me on June the 9, 2016 at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. We have been together 2 and half years.

I recently brought Ryan to Ireland for my cousins wedding. I moved to the USA with my parents when I was 7 but both my mother and father reside in Ireland. We traveled around Ireland for a few days with my brother and a couple of friends. Ryan carried the ring around with him while we were traveling and a few times he thought I was sure I would find out.

image3On Thursday the 9th, on our last stop back to Cork, we visited the Cliff's of Moher. We were taking photos and laughing and the Ryan dropped to one knee. I remember he was nervously asking my brother for the ring, I remember spacing out into the ocean not believing this was happening. I thought I was in a dream. A wave of emotion came over me and I said yes while crying, but Ryan did this in a country (Ireland) that is so dear to my heart and will always be my home.

He definitely put thought into and it will be a day I will never forget. Ryan told me that Day's Jewelers was great to work with and I felt so comfortable with Day's too. Our big day isn't till October 2018, but I wouldn't trade June 9th 2016 on the Cliff's of Moher for anything.

  • What the Carat?!? How to pick the perfect carat size

What is the best carat size??? This is a question we hear often at Day’s. The bigger question is, what does it all mean? Carat, not to be confused with karat or carrot, is defined as a unit of mass equal to 200 mg used for measuring the weight of diamonds.  Karat is used as a measure of the purity of gold, such as 14 karat yellow gold. The metric carat was adopted in 1907 at the Fourth General Conference on Weights and Measures.  The word carat derives from the Italian carato meaning carob seed.

Today diamonds are often purchased as the symbol of love for an engagement ring.  Most girls have admired and dreamed about the perfect diamond.  Now that we are all grown up and use Pinterest to pin the perfect ring, how do we pick a diamond carat size?  We know our budget may not allow for a Lady Gaga size diamond as much as we may dream. In regards to size, we’ll try to put it into perspective.

To be clear, carat is one of the 4 C’s when purchasing a diamond is a factor in determining value. The average diamond size purchased is around a ½ carat.  A ½ carat is often a good starter for couples knowing they can trade up the diamond at some jewelry stores. At Day’s we have an awesome upgrade program to trade up your diamond.

Most engagement rings at a jewelry store have between a 1/5th carat and upwards. Size wise, a 1 carat diamond is about that of a pea.  The image below shows how a 3, 2, 1, ¾, ½ 1/3 carat loose diamond compare to a 4 carat diamond ring.  This gives a good visual of how a diamond will sparkle on you!!

    carat 2

This is a great reference to start the search for your diamond. The best way to decide on size is to visit your local store and try it on! What is better than a girl’s date and trying on sparkling diamonds? Trying on a diamond ring will give you the visual to see what looks best and fits your personality. You will know when the perfect size diamond fits you when it makes you smile, you have butterflies and know there is no other diamond that will compare.  Feel free to stop in your nearest Day’s to fall in love with your perfect diamond carat.

  • Eternity Takes Forever: Superbowl Sunday

forevermark-logo-designI wrote this awesome blog back in October. However, I feel it is fully appropriate to share it again with you all in my Eternity Takes Forever: Superbowl Sunday blog because what girl isn’t going to be watching the superbowl this Sunday (whether they want to or not).

As an avid football lover and fashionista, this blog was super fun to write and I really hope you enjoy it! Don't be scared to try it out either... and share it with your girlfriends that you know are trying to hint to their boyfriends too!

Some ladies (like me) really love football and love the culture of watching it with their men. Some women hate it and would rather do ANYTHING else with their Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays than watching a bunch of men running around tackling each other.

Generally, men tend to feel the same way about diamonds. Some men would rather do ANYTHING rather than step a foot into a jewelry store because they have no idea what they are looking for and wonder why everything costs so much.

So what is a girl to do? Easy. Train her man to love diamonds using a language he understands and LOVES. Because I love football, AND diamonds, I am uniquely qualified to help you train him. When you’ve finished these 5 steps, your man will find Forevermark diamonds just as exciting as a touchdown… Get your 5 Steps: Football to Forevermark!

melissa_blogIf you have questions, or want to give him reading material, check out this Forevermark Diamond Buying Guide. Not as fun as football - but still interesting.

Keep me posted on your luck!

  • Natural Diamonds vs. Synthetic Diamonds

7825092-diamond-isolated-on-white-background--3d-renderA very interesting and controversial issue facing the jewelry industry is the topic of synthetic (man-made) diamonds vs. natural (mined from the ground) diamonds. It is a well-known fact that existing diamond mines will not be able to produce enough diamonds to keep up with the world-wide demand for diamonds, after 2018. Diamond mines are churning diamonds at an estimated average annual growth rate of 4.8%. Come 2018 these diamond mines will see a decline of an estimated 1.9%, as diamonds are getting technically harder to find and extract. With the emergence of the middle-class economy in China and India, the demand for owning a diamond engagement ring and diamond jewelry, continues to soar.

Until 20 years ago, owning a diamond engagement ring for the denizens of these densely populated countries was unknown or only for the wealthy. Today, if you’re from China or India owning a piece of diamond jewelry is no longer a dream and it is dramatically affecting the demand for diamond production. Diamond prices will not be getting cheaper and some experts believe that diamond prices will soar in about four years. For those nay-sayers that believe that diamonds are not “rare”, do your research. Steep increases in diamond prices starting in 2018 have been projected by a new analysis by Bain & Company. (

Here are the facts about natural diamonds vs. synthetic diamonds:

    1. Natural diamonds are rare and will become rarer unless new diamond mines are discovered in the next few years. Even so, it takes several years to plan the mining of newly discovered mines.

    2. Natural diamonds are the ultimate source of transportable wealth. Movies, books and legends have been written that tell stories of global “diamond heists” that have inspired us all about worth of this rare and precious stone.

    3. Natural diamonds are beautiful and rare. They have become the symbol of commitment and love, unparalleled to any other product sold in the world today.

    4. Synthetic, or man-made diamonds, have been utilized mostly for industrial purposes. Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, and are commonly used for industrial purposes such as in drill bits.

    5. Until now, through technological advances, the cost of producing man-made diamonds has declined. Synthetic diamonds can now be grown in a laboratory selling for about 20% less than Natural diamonds mined from the earth.

    6. The chemical composition of Synthetic diamonds is similar to a Natural diamond, however their genesis is different.

    7. Advanced equipment can easily distinguish between the two types by checking the inclusions and internal composition of the diamonds. Synthetic diamonds have distinct metal inclusions which natural diamonds are devoid of. However, synthetic diamonds are very difficult to distinguish from natural diamonds without this advanced equipment.

Always buy a diamond from a trusted jeweler who can verify their diamond sources. Every girl waits for the special moment when she is popped with “The Question”. A diamond is the ultimate symbol of love and power. Nothing else on this earth will conjure the same emotional response. Will the desire to own a diamond change, if these rare natural gemstones can now be manufactured in a laboratory? Will a Man-made diamond generate the same emotional reaction that a rare and Natural diamond will? Call me a traditionalist, but I think that some things should never change, especially when it comes to the matters of love and admiration. Rare and Natural diamonds represent the rare and natural bond that symbolizes the emotional human encounter. Should this be synthesized?
