April 14, 2023Earth Day is right around the corner! At Day’s Jewelers, this means we’re taking the time to let you in on the important things to know about sustainable jewelry and conscious consumerism. As of 2003, Jewelers of America, International Diamond Manufacturers Association, and the World Federation of Diamond Bourses have organized a certification process that works hard to control the diamonds that are changing hands and coming into and out of over 60 countries. This is called the “Kimberley Process” and the ultimate goal is to eliminate conflict diamonds from the market. One great example of responsibly mined gemstones comes from the Montana sapphire mine. These mines were discovered in 1892, with mining first commencing there in the early 1900s. ...Read more »

March 15, 2021Approximately 92 percent of the world’s diamonds are cut in India. Surat, to be specific. India cuts the majority of diamonds because of the country’s closeness to mines located in Africa and other surrounding countries. India’s labor is also cheap and skilled. However, cheap and skilled labor comes at a cost. Indian women don’t often have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to work in these diamond factories. KP Sangvhi changed that in 2012. It became the first diamond manufacturer in India to open a women-run diamond factory, and has changed the lives of all of its employees. ...Read more »This entry was posted in: Social Responsibility

April 15, 2015It's not everyday that a proposal takes place in a foriegn country that Day's gets to be part of! Below Elsie and Griffin share their experience of going to the Great Wall and working with Day's Jewelers to find the perfect engagement ring (nice work Griffin!). Elsie's magical day: When planning the trip to Korea, we made sure to keep the Great Wall on the list of "must see". As we rode up the chair lift through the haze we could see the wall becoming more clear. And when we finally walked out it was surreal. We had to keep telling ourselves where we were and how amazing it was to really be standing on such a historic site. At the top of a small mound in the wall our tour guide said that would be a great spot for a picture. As we posed, Griffin pulled out a small box. It was too small for a ring, so that thought was quickly ruled out. Inside the box though, was a golden snitch, which was such a thoughtful gift for any Harry Potter fan. It was actually a locket I had been ...Read more »

April 23, 2013In 2005, my friend Alethe Clemetson took a leave of absence from her job as a gemologist at Tiffany and Company. She volunteered with Cross-Cultural Solutions in Tanzania working with children at the Kilimahewa Kindergarten School teaching basic math and English. Camping with the tribes gave Clemetson a taste of what it's like to actually live in the dire conditions that the local people face everyday, including a lack of clean water. Part of the experience was to live as a Maasai woman walking about 5 miles to fetch water each day. The water wasn't clean and the wells were surrounded by slippery mud making retrieving the water incredibly dangerous. Alethe wasmoved and inspired when she returned. Shortly after that, she quit her job at Tiffany and founded Jewelers That Care with the mission of funding water wells for remote African villages. Eight years later Alethe is continuing her efforts and speading the inspiration she felt in ...Read more »This entry was posted in: Social Responsibility

April 13, 2013A friend of mine just posted a picture of her new engagement ring on Facebook. The ring, like her, was unique with a gorgeous bright red ruby set in classic yellow gold. After I congratulated her and gushed over how beautiful the ring was I had to ask, "why no diamond?" She replied, "Bling has never really been my thing." I had to agree. Of all my friends she was never one to wear something flashy but she was the first to volunteer to pick up trash around campus, organize the annual MS walk, and donate the few extra dollars she had as a college student to causes she believed in. I realized I hadn't told her enough about the Day's Diamonds for Peace program. Day's Diamonds ...Read more »

March 16, 2012Our customers have become increasingly concerned about where our products are sourced. They want to be assured that our diamonds are not used to fund terrorism or to overthrow legitimate governments. They want to know chemicals used to refine the gold in our jewelry are disposed of properly so the environment is not harmed by production. They want to be certain that slavery and child labor practices are never employed to manufacture our jewelry. Ensuring that our products have been responsibly sourced is a priority for the Day's team. Identifying the source of gold and gemstones is very difficult because the majority of the raw products we use to build our jewelry come from other countries. In 2005, the Responsible ...Read more »This entry was posted in: Social Responsibility
