  1. Let's Talk Pearls: Cleaning and Care

Let's Talk Pearls: Cleaning and Care
One of a few June birthstones, pearls are seen as a symbol of sophistication, class, and professionalism. But, what do you do once you have them? Pearls can be intimidating to store and care for because of their notorious cleaning and care difficulty. However, it doesn’t have to be scary or stressful, and once you know the simple rules of pearl care, you’ll feel like a pro in no time! ...

  5. Pearls: June's Magnificent Birthstone

I have a special soft spot for June’s birthstone, not only because pearls are my birthstone, but because they’re some of the coolest gemstones in the industry! Pearls are the only gemstones to be formed by a living creature in a process that can take years in the wild. Without human interference, pearls develop when a tiny irritant- a grain of sand, a shard of pebble- enters the inside of an oyster. That irritant stimulates the pearl to protect its soft flesh by covering the grain of sand with a layer of nacre, a milky-white fluid that hardens over time. The oyster continuously covers that grain of sand with nacre, growing a precious pearl over months and years. The end result is a gorgeous, luminous little gemstone that’s pried out of an oyster and made suitable for jewelry. The process behind growing pearls has been mastered by human beings. Pearl farmers use a tiny bead, most often a mother-of-pearl shard or something simil ...

  6. April Showers

April showers bring May flowers. It’s an adage we’ve all heard, and for us in New England, those April showers don’t just help the land to bloom, but it melts the snow! Spring is such a reflective time, waiting for the snow to melt, for the mud to clear, for the shoots to start pushing up out of the ground. Spring breaks the stillness of winter, putting growth and plans for gardens and outdoor activities in motion. Still, there’s something restless about spring, waiting for that weather to clear so we can finally leave the house after winter. That doesn’t make the season any less beautiful, though. To get you through those last dregs of winter, Day’s has a gorgeous collection of pieces that reflect those April showers. Pretty Blue Diamon ...

  7. Cultured Pearls: Start to Finish

How are cultured pearls created? Cultured pearls are grown in live oysters. Much like natural pearls, cultured pearls start with a shell bead that is surgically implanted in a host oyster. To protect itself, the oyster secretes a crystalline substance called "nacre," over the irritant. Over time, the nacre layers build on one another, creating the deep luster favored in high quality cultured pearls. Different types cultured pearls: Akoya Cultured Pearls -Cultured primarily in Japan, they are the classic cultured pearls that come to mind when the word "pearl" is mentioned. They are the most lustrous of all pearls ...
