  2. Appreciative Words about Maine's State Gemstone: Tourmaline

As my summer internship is coming to an end and school is set to begin again, I can’t help but feel a sense of appreciation, not only for Day’s Jewelers as a company, but the stone I’ve been able to work closely with the last few months, Maine tourmaline. I was given a huge amount of responsibility to take some of the last remaining mined Maine tourmaline, and transform the stones into beautiful pieces of finished jewelry for our customers to gift and be gifted with for years to come. Pictured is one of our new arrivals this summer, the River Stone ...

  3. Why the Responsible Jewellery Council is an Investment Customers Should Care About

In 2007, Day’s Jewelers became one of the first retail jewelers in the United States to join the Responsible Jewellery Council. The Responsible Jewellery Council is a worldwide network of jewelers, vendors, and manufacturers committed to ensuring that a set of best business practices are enforced within the jewelry industry.  RJC is a very intense commitment, but what does this mean for Day’s Jewelers customers? Why should you care that Day’s is an RJC participant?  What benefit does an RJC membership offer to you, and how does it affect the jewelry you buy ...

  4. Anniversary Gifts Revisited

For any married folks, you’ve probably heard of anniversary gifts. The tradition of giving gifts at certain years of marriage originated in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, and it’s continued since then with a little tweaking. The silver and gold wreaths of the Germanic people in the Middle Ages morphed into a more extensive list of designated gifts in Victorian England, mostly focused on the addition of diamonds. In 1922, Emily Post cemented the idea of anniversary gifts with her publication of the “Blue Book of Social Usage.” Emily Post’s list of gifts for every wedding anniversary through the 15th, and including the 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th became a standard that was once again updated in 1937 by the American National Retail Jeweler Association, including an extensive list of gifts for every anniversary through the 20th, and every 5th year after that up to the 75th. ...

  5. Pearls: June's Magnificent Birthstone

I have a special soft spot for June’s birthstone, not only because pearls are my birthstone, but because they’re some of the coolest gemstones in the industry! Pearls are the only gemstones to be formed by a living creature in a process that can take years in the wild. Without human interference, pearls develop when a tiny irritant- a grain of sand, a shard of pebble- enters the inside of an oyster. That irritant stimulates the pearl to protect its soft flesh by covering the grain of sand with a layer of nacre, a milky-white fluid that hardens over time. The oyster continuously covers that grain of sand with nacre, growing a precious pearl over months and years. The end result is a gorgeous, luminous little gemstone that’s pried out of an oyster and made suitable for jewelry. The process behind growing pearls has been mastered by human beings. Pearl farmers use a tiny bead, most often a mother-of-pearl shard or something simil ...
