September 09, 2019As lab-grown diamonds become more prevalent in mainstream jewelry, there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the gems. The phrase “lab-grown,” "synthetic," or "lab-created" brings to mind scientists stirring a vat of mysterious liquid that somehow results in something similar to a diamond being created, but that’s not quite the process. Let’s review a few of the burning questions that may be on your mind when it comes to lab-grown diamonds. Photo courtesy of Lightbox Are they real?In short, yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties that natural diamonds do; the only difference between l ...Read more »This entry was posted in: gemstones , diamond , information about , gemstone information , gemstone facts , Day's Jewelers , jewelry education , did you know , online shopping , jewelry , gift , diamond prices , diamonds online , buying a diamond , internet diamond prices , tips on buying a diamond , diamonds , synthetic diamonds , man made diamonds , diamond information , lab-grown diamonds

June 13, 2014Today many of us jump to the internet as our first option for any purchase. Myself, I use it as a tool to gage what is acceptable to pay for something that can be purchased anywhere. If there is one thing that defies this rule it is shopping for diamond engagement rings;no two diamonds are the same. That is not to say that you should not do your research to get a general education and an idea of what to expect. Next, you need to trust your jeweler. A mall jeweler generally is going to have cookie-cutter pieces that are set by some factory in china based on strict cost cutting procedures, and generally has minimal education on the finer points of jewelry. Choosing a jeweler you trust can be a time consuming ...Read more »This entry was posted in: diamond engagement ring , diamond prices , diamonds online , buying a diamond , internet diamond prices

December 05, 2013Why are internet prices on diamonds all different - for the "same" quality? The other day aguest came in and asked if we would match internet pricing on diamonds. My answer may surprise you. I said, "I do not match diamond prices because no two diamonds are the same. I can, however, look at what you are seeing and most likely find a better priced diamond for you." Of course, the guest looked at me with a perplexed look and asked "If they are both G / SI1 and a half carat, aren't they the same?" Good question. The answer is yes...and no. The diamonds should be almost the same in color and clarity, but that is where the similarity may end. So, why are internet prices on diamonds different for the "same" quality diamonds? The retail myth: Ever heard ...Read more »

April 15, 2012April Birthstone, Part 3 of our Diamond Learn About Series. Diamond Carat: When Jewelers refer to a diamond's carat they are actually referring to the weight of the stone, not the size. In jewelry, the size of a stone is measured in millimeters; since diamonds can be cut shallow, deep or ideally, it is impossible to accurately convert a diamond's carat weight into an exact mm size. However, a very rough conversion can be made. Despite the ability to very roughly convert carat weight to size, the only accurate way to know the true carat weight of your diamond is to weigh it. Thus, 1 carat has become universally known as being a metric weight of 0.02 grams. The weight of a diamond has the most significant impact on its price. Since the larger a stone is, the rarer it is; one 2 carat diamond will be more expensive than the total cost of two 1 carat diamonds of the same quality. The carat of a diamond is often ...Read more »

April 08, 2012Part two of our April Birthstone - Diamond Series! Diamond Clarity: Clarity refers to the number of "inclusions" that are found inside of a diamond. Inclusions are scratches, trace minerals, or other tiny characteristics or markings that can detract from the way light bounces from mirror to mirror (known as "facets") within a diamond. It is extremely rare to find a diamond without inclusions. Inclusions are distinguishing characteristics which represent the uniqueness of each diamond and are often called the diamond's "fingerprint" because no two stones are exactly alike. If a diamond is found without any inclusions it ranked "flawless," and can be quite costly. The number of inclusions in a diamond is determined on a scale based on the visibility and location of these flaws when the diamond is beneath 10x magnification. Two common diamond grading houses are ...Read more »This entry was posted in: birthstone , diamond prices , diamonds , diamond information , diamond earrings , birthstone jewelry

Diamonds happen to be the birthstone of the month for April as well. Diamond Cut: One matter of preference is the shape that a diamond is cut into. Any shape other than a classic round is called a "fancy cut". Some of the most common fancy cut shapes are: Fancy cut diamonds make an extremely strong statement and are a unique and beautiful way to distinguish your personality and style. ...Read more »This entry was posted in: birthstone , diamond prices , diamonds , diamond information , diamond earrings , birthstone jewelry

December 02, 2011I received an email from a customer last week that I think describes Day's better than anything I've ever read. Let me share... "Hello, My fiance proposed in April, and chose Day's because he found that your associates were the most helpful and informative in comparison to every other store he went to, letting him make an informed decision without being too pushy. When I needed to get my ring re-sized, I was floored when your repairs staff seemed to rearrange their schedules to fit my re-sizing in and get it done within an hour! (It has taken some of my friends days and even weeks for their rings to be re-sized at other places!) It was this service that brought us back to purchase ...Read more »This entry was posted in: engagement rings , Day's Jewelers , Jewelers in Maine , diamond prices , Jewelers in New Hampshire

October 25, 2011Have you ever wondered what you should do to keep your possessions safe? Add an extra lock on the door, close the windows at night and don't leave a hide-a-key outside. But, how do you protect your jewelry? What if the ring you wear everyday loses its stone? This past weekend, Day's Jewelers in South Portland participated in an insurance event with Noyes, Hall and Allen Insurance. During this event, representatives from Day's including Cheryl Castner, LT Sierra and Steve Puff consulted people on whether or not they should insure their jewelry. Before you can insure it, a proper appraisal should take place. This is true for any type of jewelry. gemstones, diamonds, pearls, timepieces, anything!
