Mardi Gras celebrations begin in Louisiana on January 6th with parades, masquerade parties, and lots of delicious, rich, hearty food. This festival, or Carnival / Carnaval, as it is known in places like Brazil and Venice, originated as a way to indulge on “Fat Tuesday” before the Christian period known as Lent, during which certain foods rich, fatty foods are avoided in the time leading up to Easter. During “Fat Tuesday”, or Mardi Gras (in French), people would eat up all of these foods that they may have still had lying around the house in preparation. Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated from January 6th until March 1st with King Cake, gumbo, and beignets, among many other delicious ...Read more »
