  2. The "Meltdown" Watch by Reactor, Durable Enough for a Lobsterman

Working in Maine'smid-coast region we encounter many lobstermen and fishermen at our Brunswick location. This spring, I had the opportunity to talk with a lobsterman who told me he would love to own a nice watch, but in his line of work, they get ruined quickly. I told him I had just the watch for him. Iput a Reactor on his wrist and told him it was the best built performance sport watch he could buy and even if he broke it, Reactor would repair it ...

  4. How to Buy a Diamond: The 4C's and the 5th

Often I have guests come into Day's with this perplexed and dazed look that I've come to know well. I often see guys with this look and it has a simple cause: They are about to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives by asking their loved one to marry them. The perplexed look is caused by information overload as they try to understand buying a diamond. It seems simple at first...at least until you start to search the internet. Sure, there are any number of websites that will quote you chapter and verse on the 4Cs of Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat Weight. However, few to none offer any real advice on how to actually put the knowledge to use. Hopefully ...

  5. Waxing Poetic: Personalized Jewelry

As a fashion jewelry buyer, it is my job to seek out new, exciting, and innovative product. I have been on the lookout for a line of jewelry that would give our guests the opportunity to own a piece that was deeply personal; a piece that would showcase who they are and the things that are important to them and have shaped them.   I found the answer to that collection in a line called ...

  6. Why Does My White Gold Ring Turn Yellow?

The other day a customer came in with a ring she purchased about a year ago. She asked me, "Is it just me, or does this look like my white gold ring is turning yellow to you, too?" Before I could answer, she promptly informed me the store where she purchased it told her it was 14kt white gold. She felt she was misled and the ring was some base metal that had been plated and she was obviously upset about the situation. Unfortunately, we run into this in the jewelry industry far too often. Why? Because we as jewelers do a poor job explaining the metals and gemstones we sell. We are also guilty of assuming that everyone has all the basics of jewelry knowledge that we possess. These two items lead to more confusion and anger on the part of our guests than anything else we do. What does 14kt really mean?   ...

  8. 5 Fall Fashion Jewelry Tips

Summer is over. I know, it's ok to be sad, but just for a little bit. Now it's time for sweaters, boots, and big jewelry! I've been checking out a lot of the Fall fashion jewelry trends for 2013 and the theme is still going strong with the pantone emerald. However, this fall we get to play with colors like acai, koi, and samba to name a few. Aside from adding some color to your jewelry wardrobe, be ready to add big, bold statement pieces. Can I tell you how happy this makes me? I am, afterall, the queen of big, bold jewelry. These are your colors, work 'em! My selected favorites would be koi, vivacious, and acai. 9. The Myths of Estate Jewelry

What is considered estate jewelry anyway? Estate is a fancy way to say a piece is pre-owned. At Day's we purchase a lot of pre-owned pieces from our guests that we offer for sale in our estate jewelry collection. We also purchase pieces that we turn into totally different designs by separating the gemstones and diamonds and melting the metal. A lot of misconceptions are associated with estate jewelry so this blog will help you debunk the myths and serve as a guide to buying estate jewelry. Myth 1: Estate jewelry has bad "Juju" It is true that estate pieces come with a story but the reason that someone sells their jewelry isn't just because ...
