  6. Learn About Iolite

Iolite, also called the "gem of the Vikings," is a liquid violet-blue stone, similar to tanzanite and sapphirein that they all share a bluish tone. Mined in India, Sri Lanka, Africa and Brazil, Iolite is easily obtained as a 4 or 5 carat stone, however much larger stones have been found (AGTA). Iolite's original purpose was serving seafaring Vikings as a navigational tool to give accurate readings of the sun's position on the open seas. 9. Engagement Rings by Michael M.

After more than a quarter century in the jewelry manufacturing and engagement ring business, designer Michael Meksian -simply known as "Michael M."knows his customer well. "Sophisticated, fashion-forward and modern: those are the characteristics of the woman who will immediately recognize the value of a Michael M jewelry design." "We are catering to a consumer who desires nothing less than the very best," says Michael. Each jewelry design lives up to this credo through a series of steps from design inception to the consumer's experience in- store. The collection is first imagined by Michael himself, and is then made entirely by hand in the company's Los Angeles design studio. Very labor intensive, every diamond is mounted using a microscope directly on metal, and each hole is individually drilled. The average engagement ring mounting contains nearly 100 diamonds, taking ...
