Rubies come in all spectrums of red from slight pink to blood red. Rubies are considered one of the four “precious gemstones” along with emeralds, sapphires, and diamonds. Myth tells of the first Ruby being born from a dragon’s egg. Due to their ancient beginning, rubies have a long and wide mystique. They are said to indicate boldness, confidence, protect your home and land, and bring abundant passion to the wearer’s life. Rubies are the second hardest gemstone (next to diamonds) and are ranked 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness). Rubies are actually a version of the mineral corundum.
The most luxurious and highly coveted of rubies is the “Burmese Ruby” which, despite its name, does not necessarily come from Burma. Burmese Rubies are called such because of a slight bluish tint to their overall color. Next in line are Siamese Rubies which display a slight purple-brown tint. Last are the Ceylon Rubies which are bright ripe raspberry red, but these are exceedingly rare today. Rubies that do not have any natural tints may be treated via diffusion or heating. These permanent treatments help the ruby glow and gleam as bright red as possible. Ruby is the birthstone for July.
