How Diamonds Are Made Diamonds are rare because of the way they are formed: diamonds come from deep within the Earth's crust. A diamond is formed under intense heat and pressure from soft, black, worthless carbon. This carbon becomes the hardest of all known substances: the diamond. Created more than 3 billion years ago and thrown to the Earth's surface through volcanic eruptions or mining, diamonds are truly a wonder of nature. Diamond is the birthstone for April.

Diamond Care and Ring SizingDiamond Care: Natural diamonds are a very rare, durable gemstone. They are the hardest known substance to man, but durability has its limits. Many substances coming in contact with a diamond may diminish its beauty and brilliance. Since many diamonds (such as engagement or wedding rings) are often worn 24 hours a day, special thought should be given to their care.
To help you with proper care, we have provided a list of suggestions that will prolong the years of enjoyment from your diamond jewelry. -Lotions, powders, soaps, and even natural skin oils will create a film on the surface of a diamond and reduce its fiery glow; therefore, rings should be removed when washing your hands, bathing, applying cosmetics, washing dishes, or digging in the garden. -Be careful not to knock your diamond against hard surfaces. There is a chance that an already present cleavage or fracture in the diamond crystal could be further widened. Though diamonds are very hard, they can be broken. -When storing diamond jewelry, take care not to allow diamonds to touch metals or other gemstones. Diamonds can be scratched from such contact.
To clean your diamond jewelry, they should be allowed to soak for 15 minutes in either Day's Jewelry Cleaner or your homemade cleaner and brushed with a soft brush. It should then be rinsed in water and dried with a lint-free cloth.
To create your own cleaning solution, mix 2 cups of warm water, one tablespoon of ammonia, and a bit of dish soap. It is also safe to place your Diamond in an ultrasonic cleaner or vibratory cleaning machine which can be purchased from Day's.
Day's recommends that you have your diamond jewelry professionally inspected and cleaned at least once every 6 months. The Day's staff will make sure your diamond is secure in its mounting. We will then buff and ultrasonically clean your diamond jewelry which will remove dirt caught beneath the stone and give your diamond the brilliance it had when you first bought it. Day's offers this service free of charge.
Ring Sizing: At Day's Jewelers, standard size for lady's rings is 6-6.5, men's rings 10- 10.5. Our team of on-staff professional goldsmiths are prepared to custom size your ring very quickly, usually at no charge. Since it is best practice to size a ring only once, we recommend you order the ring in standard size. If it doesn't fit, the recipient should have his/her finger measured in a jewelry store and have it sized then.Your option to size will appear when you hit the 'add to basket' button.
If this is not practical, there are a number of ways to determine finger size;
1) Take a ring you know is worn on the ring-finger (finger sizes can differ from right to left hand) to a jewelry store and ask them to tell you what size it is. 2) Take a slice of soft bread and press a ring that fits the ring-finger into the bread until a cut out or clear impression of the ring is left on the bread. Take this bread to a jeweler and have them deduce the ring size. 3) Take a ring that you know fits the ring finger and measure it against the table below.

4) Go to a jewelry store and ask them to measure your finger (it's free).
5) Wrap a piece of string around the knuckle of the finger you are interested in knowing the size of and cut it where the two ends meet. Place this against a ruler and compare it to the chart below to determine finger size. (Measure the knuckle because you will need to be able to get the ring off and on. If you would like the ring to fit tightly, order ½ a size smaller than the knuckle size.

6) The chart below may be used to determine finger size, however print size must be correct;

It means we purchase precious metals, gemstones and other products as close to the source as possible to eliminate "middle man" profits.
- We promise to provide the opportunity for everyone to own fine jewelry. It doesn't matter how much money you have, how young you are or how you're dressed, you'll always be welcome with open arms at Day's.
- We promise that trust will always be at the foundation of our existence. This means that we will never compromise integrity for short term profits.
- We promise to value jewelry for the sentiment it represents. This means we understand and respect that a $10 sterling silver chain can mean as much to its owner as a $10,000 diamond ring does to its owner. |
