Carat weight Color Clarity Cut See All 29 Factors that Affect the Price of a Diamond
How Diamonds Are Made Diamonds are rare because of the way they are formed: diamonds come from deep within the Earth's crust. A diamond is formed under intense heat and pressure from soft, black, worthless carbon. This carbon becomes the hardest of all known substances: the diamond. Created more than 3 billion years ago and thrown to the Earth's surface through volcanic eruptions or mining, diamonds are truly a wonder of nature. Diamond is the birthstone for April.

Sterling Silver Care and Ring SizingGold Care: Gold does not tarnish and its beauty remains constant for years. The two elements that are most destructive to gold jewelry are mercury and chlorine. For this reason, Day's Jewelers recommends removing your gold jewelry before entering a swimming pool, hot tub or coming in contact with bleach or other products containing chlorine. It is also a good idea to remove some gold chains at night and store them flat to avoid kinking or breaking. Gold pieces should never be kept in the same pouch because rubbing together may cause scratching and wearing away of the gold. This is even more likely if the jewelry contains diamonds or other hard gemstones.
If you find that gold jewelry is leaving your skin discolored, the problem is not actually with the gold. Each person has a different level of skin acidity and this can react with alloys within gold jewelry. This reaction may leave smudges on the skin's surface. Talc, found in cosmetics, medicated creams, lotions, and toothpaste, may get lodged on the underside of jewelry, and can cause smudging. Such particles abrade the jewelry metals, depositing gold particles on the skin that appear dark since they are too small to reflect light.
White gold is yellow gold mixed with nickel, zinc, and other metals to give it the white color. White gold will always have a yellow tint. To mask the yellow tint, it is usually coated with rhodium. Rhodium is a very hard white metal. Over time, the rhodium plating will wear away causing white gold jewelry to appear yellow. When this happens, your white gold jewelry can be re-rhodium plated to return the bright, white finish.
Day's Jewelers has a staff of trained professionals in each of our stores that would be happy to clean your gold jewelry for you while you wait. If it's not convenient for you to stop by one of our locations, you can clean most gold jewelry with jewelry cleaner or mild soap and ammonia, using a soft bristle brush. Day's Jewelers can customize gold jewelry by engraving a personal message of your choosing on the piece.
Should anything ever happen to your gold jewelry, Day's Jewelers has in-house professional goldsmiths who can repair, resize, or alter it.
Sterling Silver Care: 1. Remove your sterling jewelry before washing dishes, swimming or using any product that contains bleach, ammonia, alcohol, turpentine and fingernail polish removers that contain acetone. These items could cause a breakdown in the metal alloys leaving your silver jewelry beyond repair, dull or pit the surface of the gemstones. Avoid using strong chemicals, spraying hairspray, or putting on makeup etc. while wearing your jewelry. Put jewelry on after using hairspray and putting on makeup.
2. Clean before storing and store properly. Sterling silver stored in the open air and humidity for extended periods of time can cause it to tarnish quickly. Tarnish first appears as a golden hue then quickly turns to black. This process is normal and is caused by oxidization, moisture and sunshine. Store silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or a plastic zip- lock bag made of Mylar (turkey cooking bags) or polyethylene. But, beware some plastic contains sulfur compounds which can cause your jewelry to tarnish faster or stain, so do not use polyvinyl plastic bags. Avoid storing directly on wood surfaces, and do not place in a card board box or on paper as they contain sulfur producing compounds that increase the rate of oxidation.
3. Keep tarnish to a minimum by storing properly and cleaning before it becomes overly tarnished. Follow the recommend cleaning methods below.
4. Jewelry is meant to be worn. Your body oils will slow the tarnishing process. Touch your silver jewelry a lot. This may sound funny, but you won't have to clean it as often and remember, using a cleaning and polishing cloth just takes a few minutes.
5. Sterling silver jewelry is scratch resistant but it isn't scratch proof, so you should store your jewelry so that it isn't rubbing up against other articles.
6. Clean your sterling silver jewelry with a soft 100% cotton cloth (nub free), flannel cloth, special sterling silver cleaning cloth or very soft bristle brush, (i.e. a babies tooth brush or a horsehair silver brush) and gently rub off any excess makeup or dirt. Remember silver is a very soft metal and can be scratched so don't rub it too briskly. Do not use paper, polyester, or coarse fabrics as they often contain wood fibers or synthetics that can cause tiny scratches on sterling silver jewelry. Dirt left from previous cleanings may also scratch your jewelry.
7. Light dirt, fingerprints or makeup can be removed by using a small amount of mild liquid detergent to 1/2 cup of warm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. If your jewelry contains gemstones be careful as a cleanser that is too harsh could damage the polish on stones. Dry the jewelry completely before storing in an air tight zip lock bag. Sterling silver jewelry can also be cleaned with little effort using a polishing cloth. After polishing it buff with a soft cotton cloth (i.e. old diaper or cotton t-shirt).
8. If the jewelry is heavily tarnished and needs more cleaning than a polishing cloth can provide, use a silver paste, liquid cleaner or a silver polish spray.
9. Rub with a lengthwise motion, as a circular motion may cause scratches. Don't feel that you have to get every bit of tarnish from lines and crevices. Some choose to leave tarnish in the deep crevices to enhance the look of the piece. Leaving some of the tarnish in hard to reach areas just adds definition and an antique look. If you want to remove tarnish in hard to reach areas, use a very soft brush, like a child's tooth brush, a jewelry horse hair silver brush, or a mushroom brush. A mushroom brush can be found at most grocery stores. After cleaning with a silver polish, use a clean cloth to remove any residual cleaner from your jewelry. After using the paste, the liquid or the polishing cloth make sure all trace of the polish has been removed from gemstones and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Ring Sizing: At Day's Jewelers, standard size for lady's rings is 6-6.5, men's rings 10- 10.5. Our team of on-staff professional goldsmiths are prepared to custom size your ring very quickly, usually at no charge. Since it is best practice to size a ring only once, we recommend you order the ring in standard size. If it doesn't fit, the recipient should have his/her finger measured in a jewelry store and have it sized then.Your option to choose a size will appear when you hit the 'add to basket' button.
If this is not practical, there are a number of ways to determine finger size;
1) Take a ring you know is worn on the ring-finger (finger sizes can differ from right to left hand) to a jewelry store and ask them to tell you what size it is. 2) Take a slice of soft bread and press a ring that fits the ring-finger into the bread until a cut out or clear impression of the ring is left on the bread. Take this bread to a jeweler and have them deduce the ring size. 3) Take a ring that you know fits the ring finger and measure it against the table below.

4) Go to a jewelry store and ask them to measure your finger (it's free).
5) Wrap a piece of string around the knuckle of the finger you are interested in knowing the size of and cut it where the two ends meet. Place this against a ruler and compare it to the chart below to determine finger size. (Measure the knuckle because you will need to be able to get the ring off and on. If you would like the ring to fit tightly, order ½ a size smaller than the knuckle size.

6) The chart below may be used to determine finger size, however print size must be correct;
