Learn About Opals
Opal is one of the few mineraloids used in fine jewelry making. It is a flashy stone that captures the colors of the rainbow deep within itself. Opals are thought to bring good fortune while sadness and envy are said to melt away leaving only love when one is present. Opal is a symbol of hope and innocence and is an endless pick-me-up. Opals occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock and have even been found with fossils embedded within them. Australia considers Opal its national gemstone and 97% of the worlds Opals come from there.
However, Opals from other locations come in many colors and thus Opal is classified as Dark or Black Opal, White or Light Opal, Milk or Crystal Opal, Boulder Opal, Opal Matrix, “Picture Stones“, and Mexican or Fire Opal. Each category of Opal has its own signature color spectrum though the light/ white or milk/crystal Opal has been most heavily sold throughout the years. Judge Opals based on the amount of color play they exhibit. Opal is a softer stone ranking 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness) and should be worn with care. Opal is one of the birthstones for October.

Day's Jewelers offers a lifetime warrantee against defects in materials and workmanship on any piece of jewelry purchased from us. We will also replace any stones, free of charge, in case of loss from the mounting, provided the jewelry was inspected by Day's Jewelers within six months of the loss. This warrantee does not cover excessive abuse or normal wear.
Day's will professionally clean and inspect you jewelry at no charge any time. For warrantee purposes, these inspections must be verified on the Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase by a Day's Jewelers associate. If you have moved to another area, and are unable to bring it to a Day's Jewelers store, please contact us, and we will find a reputable jeweler in your area who will inspect it for you free of charge.
Loss or damage is not covered resulting from abuse, normal wear, mysterious disappearance or repair, sizing or any other work done on your jewelry other than by Day's Jewelers or another jewelry company that we have specifically authorized. Day's Jewelers will repair or replace your setting at our option, if it is defective in materials or craftsmanship, provided the semiannual inspections have been performed.
How to Obtain Warranty Services:
If your jewelry requires any service, simply return it together with your Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase to any Day's store. You can also mail the item back to us for warranty service. Please send it, properly insured, to DFJ, 88 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.

Order Processing Time
- Most orders received before 2:00 PM EST will be shipped the same day.
