Gold is the most classic metal used in jewelry making and symbolizes wealth and prestige. Extremely malleable, gold can be easily crafted into ornate and unique shapes- making it a favorite with many jewelry designers. However, since gold is so soft it is almost always alloyed with other metals to make it durable enough for everyday wear and use. The metal mixed with the gold is what gives each piece its own unique color. Gold can come in yellow, rose, white, red or black; the first three colors being the most common and traditional. Some people might have allergic reactions to the metals mixed with gold but just because you have an allergy to one color or karat of gold does not mean that you will react negatively to all gold. Luckily, the extreme range of colors and karats which gold is available in make it a wonderful metal for almost everyone.

Pure gold is represented by Au or the number 79 on the periodic table and is signified by the stamp 999 on jewelry. Though incredibly dense, 24 karat gold is too soft to maintain a constant shape (one ounce can be hammered into a 300 square foot sheet of metal) so most jewelry ranges between 14 karat (58.3% gold) to 18 karat (75% gold). Gold is very resistant to tarnish, rust and corrosion but should still not be exposed to chlorine or abrasive cleaning products. If exposed regularly to these chemicals gold will lose its natural, shiny, yellow color. Rhodium, a very hard white metal, is often used to coat white gold so it maintains its white luster. If white gold begins to show a yellow tint, it is probably because the rhodium finish has worn off. In this case, the piece of jewelry may be easily re-coated with rhodium to bring it back to its original white luster

Day's Jewelers, in conjunction with our suppliers, offers an unconditional warrantee on all standard style gold chains and chain bracelets purchased from us. If you should experience any problem whatsoever with your chain purchased from us, we will replace it for a nominal $9.50 shipping and handling fee to send it back to our supplier.
How to Obtain Warranty Services:
If your gold chain requires any service, simply return it together with your Documentation of Purchase to any Day's store. You can also mail the item back to us for warranty service. Please send it to DFJ, 88 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.
