Sapphires come in every color of the rainbow and even in combinations of colors in one stone. Sapphires have come to represent fidelity, truth, purity, and chastity. They are commonly used as engagement or promise rings and the Sapphire’s most common deep blue color is said to come from the night sky. They are actually corundum minerals- though red corundum is known as ruby.
The region where a Sapphire is found often determines the appearance and color of the stone. Kashmir Sapphires have velvety shine and are regarded as the most beautiful and most valuable having a color of blue with violet undertones. Second to Kashmir Sapphires are the Burmese Sapphires which are royal to cornflower blue in color. Still the oldest specialty Sapphires are called Ceylon Sapphires; Ceylon is known as Sri Lanka today, and these ancient Sapphire’s signature is their mid- to light blue color. Sapphires are considered one of the four “precious gemstones” along with emeralds, rubies, and diamonds. Sapphire ranks 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness) making it the hardest gemstone other than diamonds. Sapphires can be worn everyday easily but can be scratched by diamonds or extremely hard metals. To achieve its brilliant colors, Sapphires are often treated with by diffusion (thin layer added) and heating which has been used on Sapphires since the time of Marco Polo. These permanent treatments help the true beauty of each stone shine. Sapphire is the birthstone for September.

Sapphire Care:
Sapphire, like its gem sibling ruby, is the mineral corundum, which has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. Corundum is so tough, it is used as an abrasive. As a result, sapphire is the most durable of gems.
Clean ruby jewelry with Day's Jewelry Cleaner or with mild dish soap in warm water: Use a toothbrush to scrub behind the stone where dust, dirt and soap film may collect.

Earring Sizing:
Generally, the only earrings that are able to be altered in size are dangle or drop styles which can be shortened.
It is common for the width or thickness of an earring to be expressed in millimeters. The chart below compares centimeters to inches. One centimeter is equal to 10 millimeters.

Day's Jewelers offers a lifetime warrantee against defects in materials and workmanship on any piece of jewelry purchased from us. We will also replace any stones, free of charge, in case of loss from the mounting, provided the jewelry was inspected by Day's Jewelers within six months of the loss. This warrantee does not cover excessive abuse or normal wear.
Day's will professionally clean and inspect you jewelry at no charge any time. For warrantee purposes, these inspections must be verified on the Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase by a Day's Jewelers associate. If you have moved to another area, and are unable to bring it to a Day's Jewelers store, please contact us, and we will find a reputable jeweler in your area who will inspect it for you free of charge.
Loss or damage is not covered resulting from abuse, normal wear, mysterious disappearance or repair, sizing or any other work done on your jewelry other than by Day's Jewelers or another jewelry company that we have specifically authorized. Day's Jewelers will repair or replace your setting at our option, if it is defective in materials or craftsmanship, provided the semiannual inspections have been performed.
How to Obtain Warranty Services:
If your jewelry requires any service, simply return it together with your Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase to any Day's store. You can also mail the item back to us for warranty service. Please send it, properly insured, to DFJ, 88 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.
