Learn About Emerald
The Emerald was the most highly praised stone of the Incas and Cleopatra and was given to pregnant women to protect them during child birth. Its intense and pure green color is said to have come from the Earth’s capturing the colors of Spring. It has been prized for its said abilities to make its wearer more eloquent, creative, and relaxed.
Emeralds are considered one of the four “precious gemstones” along with rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. Emerald is the green variety of the mineral Beryl. Colombian Emeralds are held in especially high esteem due to their shiny emerald green color without any kind of bluish tint. Zambian Emeralds tend to be darker than Colombian Emeralds and often have a slight bluish tint. Zambian Emeralds are also highly regarded in international gem trade. Zimbabwe has a famous Mine called Sandawana; Emeralds from here have a delicate yellowish-green nuance.
Emeralds rank a 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness). Emerald is often referred to as the “garden” stone because nearly all have small internal cracks. Emeralds are susceptible to chipping with rough wear rather easily despite their hard ranking. Most Emeralds are impregnated with oil to mask cracks and enhance the stone’s brilliance. Emerald is the birthstone for May.
Emerald Care and Earring Sizing
Emerald Care:
Emeralds are durable gemstones with a hardness of 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale. However, emeralds with inclusions should be treated with some care and be protected from blows.
You should avoid cleaning emerald with hot soapy water or steam and should never clean an emerald in an ultrasonic cleaner because the filler material could be removed or altered, making the fissures more visible.
Clean in room temperature water and use a toothbrush to gently remove dust, dirt and soap film that has collected behind the stone.

Earring Sizing:
Generally, the only earrings that are able to be altered in size are dangle or drop styles which can be shortened.
It is common for the width or thickness of an earring to be expressed in millimeters. The chart below compares centimeters to inches. One centimeter is equal to 10 millimeters.

Day's Jewelers offers a lifetime warrantee against defects in materials and workmanship on any piece of jewelry purchased from us. We will also replace any stones, free of charge, in case of loss from the mounting, provided the jewelry was inspected by Day's Jewelers within six months of the loss. This warrantee does not cover excessive abuse or normal wear.
Day's will professionally clean and inspect you jewelry at no charge any time. For warrantee purposes, these inspections must be verified on the Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase by a Day's Jewelers associate. If you have moved to another area, and are unable to bring it to a Day's Jewelers store, please contact us, and we will find a reputable jeweler in your area who will inspect it for you free of charge.
Loss or damage is not covered resulting from abuse, normal wear, mysterious disappearance or repair, sizing or any other work done on your jewelry other than by Day's Jewelers or another jewelry company that we have specifically authorized. Day's Jewelers will repair or replace your setting at our option, if it is defective in materials or craftsmanship, provided the semiannual inspections have been performed.
How to Obtain Warranty Services:
If your jewelry requires any service, simply return it together with your Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase to any Day's store. You can also mail the item back to us for warranty service. Please send it, properly insured, to DFJ, 88 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.
