Learn About Amethyst
Considered the gem of royalty, Amethyst’s regal purple color has long been associated with passion and hope. Legend states that Amethyst helps its wearer prevent intoxication while calming and focusing the spirit. Ranking a 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness), Amethyst is a tough stone acceptable for everyday wear. The most popular variety of quartz mineral, Amethyst can come from the ground as light purple or as a darker- nearly brown color. Thus, some amethyst will be placed under heat to permanently make it the brilliant royal purple, gold, or green that it is so well known and loved for.
Amethyst is created in the cavities of mineral veins and granite rocks and is mined in our own State of Maine. Amethyst from Brazil tends to be light-colored while that from Madagascar is generally found in red or violet hues. Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
Amethyst Care and Earring Sizing
Amethyst Care:
Amethyst is the mineral quartz with a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale. It's durable and great for everyday wear.
Avoid exposure to heat or prolonged exposure to sunlight, which may bleach the color.
Clean with Day's Jewelry Cleaner or mild dish soap in warm water: Use a toothbrush to clean behind the stone where dust, dirt and soap film may collect.

Earring Sizing:
Generally, the only earrings that are able to be altered in size are dangle or drop styles which can be shortened.
It is common for the width or thickness of an earring to be expressed in millimeters. The chart below compares centimeters to inches. One centimeter is equal to 10 millimeters.

Day's Jewelers offers a lifetime warrantee against defects in materials and workmanship on any piece of jewelry purchased from us. We will also replace any stones, free of charge, in case of loss from the mounting, provided the jewelry was inspected by Day's Jewelers within six months of the loss. This warrantee does not cover excessive abuse or normal wear.
Day's will professionally clean and inspect you jewelry at no charge any time. For warrantee purposes, these inspections must be verified on the Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase by a Day's Jewelers associate. If you have moved to another area, and are unable to bring it to a Day's Jewelers store, please contact us, and we will find a reputable jeweler in your area who will inspect it for you free of charge.
Loss or damage is not covered resulting from abuse, normal wear, mysterious disappearance or repair, sizing or any other work done on your jewelry other than by Day's Jewelers or another jewelry company that we have specifically authorized. Day's Jewelers will repair or replace your setting at our option, if it is defective in materials or craftsmanship, provided the semiannual inspections have been performed.
How to Obtain Warranty Services:
If your jewelry requires any service, simply return it together with your Fine Jewelry Documentation of Purchase to any Day's store. You can also mail the item back to us for warranty service. Please send it, properly insured, to DFJ, 88 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.
