Lazare Kaplan was born in 1883. A fourth generation jeweler, he began his diamond cutting apprenticeship at his uncle’s diamond cutting factory in Belgium at the age of thirteen. When Lazare turned twenty, he began his own diamond business that has grown and prospered for generations hence. Lazare was known as one of Antwerp’s leading diamond cleavers.
Lazare Kaplan International Inc., founded in 1903, is now the premier diamond cutting company of the world. These DeBeers site holders have a strong tradition of excellence; Lazare Kaplan was the first to cut diamonds to "ideal cut" proportions. “Ideal cut” is a mathematical formula used to create precise angles and proportions to gain the most optimal reflection and refraction of light. Marcel Tolkowsky, a cousin to Lazare Kaplan, developed the mathematical formula for the “ideal cut” diamond and in 1919 Lazare Kaplan was the first implement Tolkowsky’s “ideal cut” formula.
