  • Opal Myth Debunked!

“It’s bad luck to wear opal if it’s not your birthstone.”

This is something that we hear from our guests on a regular basis. Where does this superstition come from? Frank, from Parle Jewelry Designs/Idaho Opal and Gem Corporation let us in on history of this well-known belief:
In 1829, Sir Walter Scott published a novel titled, Anne of Geierstein (or The Maiden of the Mist). This according to Frank, was the Harry Potter of its time! In this novel. The Baroness of Arnheim wears a talisman made of Opal bestowed with magical powers. When holy water is splashed on the opal, it loses its colors and the Baroness becomes a pile of ash. It is because of this fictional scene that people started to associate opals with bad omens.
Long before Sir Walter Scott’s fantastical tale, the ancient Greeks and Romans thought the opal was a symbol of good luck and fortune. Due to its many colors, the opal was a symbol of hope like the rainbow. It was often given as a gift to bring protection and wealth to the wearer. The “gift from the heavens” women often wore the gem in their hair to ensure their hair color would not fade. Opals were originally thought to possess magical qualities and bring its wearer foresight. They were used to help shy, timid people be more open in social situations as they were thought to have the power to amplify feelings and desires and promote spontaneity.
Throughout most of history, the opal has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all of the gems because it can show all colors. Black, boulder, fire or doublet, there is no denying the magnificence of opals. A single gem can flash every color with fire and intensity beyond that any diamond.

  • A Day’s Jewelers Cliff's of Moher Proposal

    Day's Jewelers Proposal Story:

Hi my nameimage2 is Michelle Devereux. My fiancé Ryan Sylvain proposed to me on June the 9, 2016 at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. We have been together 2 and half years.

    image4

I recently brought Ryan to Ireland for my cousins wedding. I moved to the USA with my parents when I was 7 but both my mother and father reside in Ireland. We traveled around Ireland for a few days with my brother and a couple of friends. Ryan carried the ring around with him while we were traveling and a few times he thought I was sure I would find out.

image3On Thursday the 9th, on our last stop back to Cork, we visited the Cliff's of Moher. We were taking photos and laughing and the Ryan dropped to one knee. I remember he was nervously asking my brother for the ring, I remember spacing out into the ocean not believing this was happening. I thought I was in a dream. A wave of emotion came over me and I said yes while crying, but Ryan did this in a country (Ireland) that is so dear to my heart and will always be my home.

He definitely put thought into and it will be a day I will never forget. Ryan told me that Day's Jewelers was great to work with and I felt so comfortable with Day's too. Our big day isn't till October 2018, but I wouldn't trade June 9th 2016 on the Cliff's of Moher for anything.

  • No Brighter Flame than Love's Fire

    dp10p0120_1Eternal Fire

There is no brighter flame than love's fire as seen in this beautiful diamond necklace. Unleashing maximum fire and brilliance, the pendant is symbolic of the eternal fire represented in the love between two people or within a family circle.

The Eternal Fire pendant is available exclusively from Day's Jewelers. Each pendant is set with our own 90 facet Northern Star diamond and available in Sterling Silver or 14kt White or Yellow Gold.

    Northern Star Diamond

The Northern Star diamond cut features 90 facets compared to the average 58 facets in a traditional solitaire. The extra facets require additional time, craftsmanship and experience of our diamond cutters to create this special diamond. The 32 additional facets enhance the ability of the diamond to refract the light and maximize brilliance, sparkle and scintillation. Only master diamond cutters with a minimum of 10 years’ experience are trusted with the task to produce a Northern Star diamond. In the time that it takes to cut and polish a Northern Star diamond, more than three round cut traditional diamonds are completed. Knowing that her diamond was given the added attention to detail is one of many benefits of purchasing a Northern Star diamond, For a Love so Strong Stars Stand Still.

Since the Northern Star shines ever so brightly in the sky, it is only befitting that the diamonds in our Northern Star collection mimic this intensity. In order to measure the light performance of our Northern Star diamonds, an overall grade is assigned according to the European Gemological Laboratory 360º Diamond Report. The Diamond’s Natural Attraction, or DNA grade, is based on 12 elements that relate to cut, proportion, light performance, polish and symmetry. Traditional industry benchmarks are also factored into the overall grade to create the ultimate symbol of your love.

Only 1% of all rough or uncut diamonds can be cut using the specific criteria of a Northern Star diamond. A Northern Star diamond is exceptionally rare and unique.

  • Celtic Jewelry by Keith Jack

Each year Day's Jewelers buyers search for new designers and collections to bring into our stores for our customers; new, fun, innovative designs. At the last JCK Jewelry show, our Silver buyer found Keith Jack and we are happy to introduce him to finally have his line in our stores to share with you, and just in time for the St. Patrick's day season!

Keith Jack has spent his life engaged with every aspect of the jewelry business; it wasn't until the birth of his two children that he became serious about designing. More than anything, he credits his children for igniting his desire to create jewelry.

Keith pulls inspiration from the raw beauty of the Scottish and Irish landscapes. Each of his jewelry collections offers something unique that he has seen in a hidden mountain loch, the grey sky over the glen or the ripples on the sandy beach.

Inspiration becomes design. Such sources of inspiration push Keith to combine textured precious metals and exotic gemstones in surprising and stunning ways. His designs are strengthened by his ability to blend ancient Celtic symbolism with contemporary style and elegance.

    keithjack_email_header

Keith currently lives in Canada, but frequently returns home to Scotland spending time in the wild, beautiful country, that is home to his inspiration.

Each Keith Jack collection has a story. Read about the stories below:

    1. The Celtic Cradle of Life: The Celtic Cradle of Life reminds us that our lives are forever intertwined with the lives of those we love. These threads that bind us to one another help to weave our own destinies; past, present and future.

    2. The Window to the Soul: Celtic legend is ripe with tales of people moving between the physical and faerie realms. With the passage of time it is now only our souls that can pierce this veil between worlds. This is because our souls are eternal, like the spiritual world, without beginning or end. See the Window to the Soul collection.

    3. Dragonfly and Reeds: The Dragonfly is a symbol of good luck, transformation and self-realization. Remember to live life to the fullest.

Day's Jewelers is an exclusive retailer to the Keith Jack collection in Maine and New Hampshire. We are very excited to have this new line, and hope you love it as much as we do.

If you’re a fan of Sterling Silver jewelry, you’re in luck!  The Metalsmiths Sterling designer line will be expanding to more of our locations.

ngers3694Usually when people think of Sterling Silver jewelry, they think of plain and basic styles. That is far from the cause with Metalsmiths Sterling.

Metalsmiths jewelry represents the highest quality of sterling silver in the world.  As a British tradition, the highest quality of sterling guarantees a link between ownership to the highest level of standards.  Metalsmiths incorporates four hallmark logos. The first hallmark represents the brand itself.

ngrs2384You can find the perfect piece of jewelry to fit your style among the many different collections by Metalsmiths, including their Signature, Panos Konidas, The Earth’s Wind & Fire, Marquise, Chakra, and Ink collections.  The second, a crest, represents commonwealth.  The third, a 925 symbol, represents the highest quality of sterling silver, and the last hallmark, a crown, represents the Monarchy of Commonwealth which represents the level of respect to which the Metalsmiths’ company aspires to treat all of their customers.

  • What to Know About Sterling Silver

lorenzo_citrine_ringSterling Silver jewelry has been around for quite a while.  It dates as far back as to the time of primitive man, and was named several different names before the word “Sterling” was created during the 12th century.

During this time, the Germans used “Easterlings” (later shortened to “Sterling”) as a payment for English cattle.  Eventually, the Easterling became the Standard English currency.

Sterling Silver had its “time to shine,” during the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era is known for its lavish affairs including affairs that involved eating. During this time it was frowned upon for food to be touched without an eating utensil. Eating utensils were made of sterling silver, and dpse0059this is where we get the term “Silverware” that we use today.

Pure silver, which is also known as fine silver, is a malleable and very soft metal.  Fine silver can become damaged very easily, so it is usually combined with other metals to become more durable. All Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5 % alloy (usually copper) metal to give it more strength.

All Sterling silver tarnishes, and can tarnish more quickly when exposed to sulfur and certain other chemicals in the air. Sterling silver jewelry is unlikely to tarnish when it is worn because it is constantly rubbing against skin or clothing.

signatureSome manufactures will plate sterling silver jewelry with a hard, bright metal called rhodium.  A rhodium plated chain will not tarnish.  It will have a bright silver color at all times. However, most people prefer not to purchase a rhodium plated chain because it does not have the natural, dull patina finish that is common to pure sterling silver.

If a sterling silver chain is stored in a sealed plastic bag with an anti-tarnish strip in the bag, it generally will not tarnish.

rsoam03531Tarnish can be removed from a piece of sterling silver jewelry by dipping it in a tarnish removal liquid for a few seconds then rinsed.  It can also be removed by rubbing it with a specially treated silver polish cloth.

Usually when people think of sterling silver jewelry, they think of something plain and silver in color.  However, as you can see that is far from the norm!
