  • Amethyst: 2018 Color of the Year

This February let's channel the late musical icon, Prince, and celebrate Purple Rain! Purple "Reign", that is! Per Pantone, the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, and here at Day's Jewelers we are ready to "rock" the color purple. Of course, there is no greater month to for us to embrace Ultra Violet than February when birthstone Amethyst dominates the jewelry world.

If you haven't already, very soon you will be seeing Ultra Violet everywhere. From furniture to hair color, candy packaging to cosmetics, clothing to vehicles, so I'm blogging to remind you to accessorize 2018 with amethyst!

As part of the Quartz family, amethyst is abundant, low maintenance, durable, affordable, and a fabulous way to show off a highly fashionable jeweled look for a great price. One of my favorite ways to show off amethyst is by stacking Ed Levin handmade sterling silver bangles featuring our favorite purple gem!

Tales have been told that supernatural powers have been linked to amethyst. For centuries, amethyst had been believed to heal and protect people from illnesses. Many even believed drinking alcoholic beverages served in amethyst cups would prevent drunkenness. While today we have modern medicine on our side, amethyst is still considered to be a healer of the body and soul through energy according to many who practice alternative medicine. Additionally, many millennials wear not only amethyst, but other Quartz crystals as well, for mental, physical, and spiritual intervention in their daily lives. Our new silver line, T. Jazelle, brings that trend to the our reality with The Cleo Collection, displaying singular cylindrical crystals on a 36 inch chain; and expansion bracelets with polished beads made out of genuine gemstones accessorized with a single silver charm.

Guest Fashionista, Morgan Bouchard, formerly of the Topsham Day's Jewelers, was kind enough to put together outfit pairings featuring Ultra Violet for your style inspiration. To enhance these looks, come try on this east-to-west oriented oval amethyst and diamond necklace set in white gold on an 18 inch chain. Of course, you will also need to try on the matching pair of earrings where the oval amethyst are oriented North-to-South. Top off the jeweled pairing by wearing this ESTATE oval amethyst ring set in 14k white gold. You'll want to act fast on the ring, it's bold, beautiful, and a great big look - but we only have ONE in company and it's the only one we will ever have!

So there you have it. Amethyst, the color of royalty, is the reigning "Prince" of 2018 thanks to Pantone and the color Ultra Violet. With Valentine's Day less than 2 weeks away, make sure to keep on trend by shopping for Amethyst. - And don't forget, if Ultra Violet is not your color, Forevermark diamonds go with everything!

  • Platinum - A Diamond’s Best Friend

Platinum – A Diamond’s Best Friend. Surveys reveal that more than 80% of women looking to be engaged, prefer Platinum for their engagement ring setting. This highly desirable and precious metal is the best compliment to a diamond because it is Pure, Rare and Eternal.

    Purest and Rarest of Metals

Typically, a piece of platinum jewelry is made up of 95% precious platinum. Compared to 14K gold which is 58.5% gold, or 18K gold which is 75% gold, platinum’s purity makes it naturally hypoallergenic especially for those with sensitive skin. Platinum is 30 times more rare than gold, which is why the world’s finest diamonds and gemstones were only set in platinum.

    Naturally White and Never Fades
Platinum’s everlasting white metal never reflects color into the diamond it showcases. Unlike white gold that requires rhodium plating every 12-18 months, platinum will never fade or change color. Platinum is eternally white.

Durable and Made for Everyday Wear
Platinum’s strength and durability makes it the most secure setting for diamonds and gemstones. Platinum’s density makes platinum highly durable, so it doesn’t wear over time. Platinum is simply the best option, especially when selecting your engagement rings or wedding bands.

    My Story
My diamond engagement ring is designed in Platinum. After nearly 32 years, my ring has never required metal repair or metal rebuilding. The beautiful everlasting white hue remains, as it did the first day I received it.  At Day’s Jewelers, I oversee the selection and purchasing of all jewelry in our 7 store locations. I’ve also seen the remarkable benefits in lifelong wear of platinum jewelry, from our customers who have chosen platinum. For that reason, I recommend platinum as the first choice. Platinum is everlasting and it stands the test of time. Make it your choice.

  • How you could be unintentionally killing your jewelry...

Like a new car, new jewelry eventually requires maintenance. This isn’t a suggestion, it’s a fact. When you love your jewelry, you wear it (as you should). When you wear it, you damage it. This fact is not so much about quality craftsmanship as it is about wear and tear.

When you drive thousands of miles on your car, it is not the car’s fault the tires need to be replaced. The same concept can (and should) be applied to jewelry. Under elements of normal wear and tear your metals should last you the following number of years without requiring prong or shank maintenance.

    1. Yellow Gold – 5 Years
    2. White Gold – 8 Years
    3. Platinum – 20 Years

This is under normal wear and tear. Below, I have created a list of activities that unintentionally kills jewelry. If you want to maximize the life of your jewelry and delay repair work as long as possible, please be (unofficially) advised to remove your jewelry when doing the following:

    1)      Cleaning:  Many cleaning chemicals contain chlorine – which is terribly harmful to most metals by causing porosity and weakening prongs and shanks. Even all-natural cleaning agents can do damage to jewelry. While they may not necessarily harm metal, they can damage most gemstones that have much softer compositional properties than diamonds. No, this does not exempt you from performing household chores! When it is time to scrub and disinfect your home, remove the jewelry on your hands first! Unlike your skin, jewelry does not heal and regenerate after chemical exposure.

    2)      Swimming: Just like with cleaning, more leisurely activities like, a soak in the hot tub or a quick swim before dinner, will damage your jewelry because of the chemical exposure.

-Furthermore, when you swim (even in fresh or salt water) your hands are exposed to cooler temperatures. When your hands are cold your fingers constrict, when your fingers constrict your rings become loose fitting, when your rings are loose they fall off!

    3)      Yard Work: We have all had blisters from raking, weeding, chopping, stacking, digging, and/or harvesting. Am I right? We have all seen what yard work does to our hands (and muscles!), imagine what it is doing to your jewelry on a microscopic level. Over time, you will do damage that will bring your ring to our repair shop. May it be a broken prong, a chipped stone, or a missing stone, you will need it repaired, and it will cost you money.

    4)      Hiking: One of my best friend’s engagement ring was purchased from me. A month after the proposal, she texted me saying her platinum was terribly scratched (and it was!).

The conversation went something like this:

Her: “You said platinum was durable.”

Me: “You climbed a mountain with your ring on.”

Need I say more? (Sorry, Karis. I use your active lifestyle as an example on a regular basis.)

    5)      Sleeping: This is a big one. The biggest, really. Folks, take your jewelry off before bed. You’re not as delicate of a sleeper as you think you are.

You may think you sleep like this:

But you really sleep like this:

When you toss and turn you are susceptible of snagging prongs in your blankets and stretching/tangling your chains. There is only so much of this that your jewelry can take.

Eventually, something is going to give and it is going to either need repair or replacement.

    6)      Gym: Kudos to all of you who work out. Really, you put my couch-potato self to shame.  I never damage my jewelry sitting on the couch. Neither will you. You will, however, damage your jewelry at the gym. Whether you are pumping iron, practicing your left JAB, or using the rowing machine (all things, I have never done in my life) you are putting serious strain on your rings. Those of you wearing rings with stones are at the most risk. FYI: Activity that causes your ring to be pressed into your hand or against something else, even if it’s only at the bottom, will bend your ring. It may not be evident right away, but when your ring bends it effects the structural integrity of the tension holding your gemstones in. They will become loose and gold work will be required to strengthen your ring again. You may even chip your stones, requiring replacement. Yes, diamonds are the least likely to chip, but they can and will if under significant strain or impact.

    7)      Carrying heavy loads: If you’re like me, you hate making two trips out to the car to bring in groceries. To maximize your efficiency, I’m sure you carry all 17 bags and a gallon of milk into the house in one trip. This will bend your ring and snag prongs catastrophically. Reread the FYI from point #6.

Jewelry is precious, delicate and valuable. While it deserves to be shown off, it deserves to be treated carefully to maximize its beauty and longevity. Please remove your jewelry before engaging in the activities listed above – they are the most frequent culprits of jewelry damage!

When the time comes, and you need repairs, Day’s Jewelers has the most professional, talented, meticulous, caring, certified and accredited jewelers in the industry. I have had the pleasure of working with most of them, I trust and respect them completely. You will too!

  • Betty's Bling Blog 2

Quite a few years ago, I was working as a travel agent and had the privilege of visiting Swarovski’s Crystal Theme museum in Tyrol, Austria and was amazed at all the beauty. The brilliance was blinding as I gazed at all the crystal figurines. They have since then, manufactured high quality lead glass crystal jewelry of which Day's is proud to display on their website and in their stores ready to lure you with a wide selection of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

Recently, this exquisite Swarovski Slake Pulse necklace appeared before me, waiting for a marketing description. I was amazed at all the details and Swarovski’s creativity and innovation used to create this beautiful necklace. I was soon enchanted by the design and especially the sparkling crystals against a black background. A necklace fit for any queen.

  • A Day’s Jewelers Cliff's of Moher Proposal

    Day's Jewelers Proposal Story:

Hi my nameimage2 is Michelle Devereux. My fiancé Ryan Sylvain proposed to me on June the 9, 2016 at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. We have been together 2 and half years.

    image4

I recently brought Ryan to Ireland for my cousins wedding. I moved to the USA with my parents when I was 7 but both my mother and father reside in Ireland. We traveled around Ireland for a few days with my brother and a couple of friends. Ryan carried the ring around with him while we were traveling and a few times he thought I was sure I would find out.

image3On Thursday the 9th, on our last stop back to Cork, we visited the Cliff's of Moher. We were taking photos and laughing and the Ryan dropped to one knee. I remember he was nervously asking my brother for the ring, I remember spacing out into the ocean not believing this was happening. I thought I was in a dream. A wave of emotion came over me and I said yes while crying, but Ryan did this in a country (Ireland) that is so dear to my heart and will always be my home.

He definitely put thought into and it will be a day I will never forget. Ryan told me that Day's Jewelers was great to work with and I felt so comfortable with Day's too. Our big day isn't till October 2018, but I wouldn't trade June 9th 2016 on the Cliff's of Moher for anything.

  • Behind the Beacon: Day's Exclusive Anniversary Charm

We are so excited to announce a new Chamilia exclusive that you will only find at Day's Jewelers! The "Beacon of Light" was designed by Senior Chamilia Designer, Troy Hiles in celebration of Day's Centennial Anniversary. This special token was created specially and can be worn on a Chamilia bracelet or on a chain and contains "Beacon of Light" engraved on the reverse of the charm. A Swarovski crystal sits atop the lighthouse and represents the source of the beacon.

When we received the first prototype of the charm we discovered that Troy had included a little note about what inspired her as she created the "Beacon of Light." Now that the charm is available to all, we wanted to share the note with you as well!

    chamilia_lighthousebead

roy's Note: When I have a chance to follow my bliss, I tend to end up in Maine, a magical place very close to my heart. As often as possible, my husband and I plan a holiday in Maine, selecting a different area each time. These trips have provided endless inspiration to me as a designer.

ngbds3242_1When designing the special lighthouse charm, I wanted to capture the beauty of the Maine coastline. You will see the ocean and sky on a crisp bright morning where there is shimmering blue as far as the eye can see. For the design of the lighthouse, I combined architectural details from several famous Maine landmarks to make an iconic central feature. The lighthouse is rendered to look tall and majestic on its foundation. At the base you will find starfish and shells as accents that add dimension and balance to the design.

The text on the back of the charm reads “Beacon of Light”. This references the essential compass within each of us that strives towards the next challenge and seeks new personal horizons. It also honors those we share our lives with who guide and protect us, providing hope and sheltering us through our adventures.

    About the Designer, Troy Hines:

Troy has been a Jewelry Design Manager and Senior Designer at Swarovski North America - Chamilia Division since May 2013. She has a background in jewelry design, teaching the craft of jewelry design, and product development.

  • My Day's Jewelers Family

06f89ccI graciously accepted the first 2013 holiday party invitation, as it came from one of my best retail partners, Day’s Jewelers.  As the celebration date loomed and my work schedule became even more hectic than usual, I wondered why I always stretch myself so thin.  I could have easily declined the offer and stayed home that Saturday night re-charging my batteries and getting ready for yet another week ahead of intense travels.

But on Saturday, November 16th, what I witnessed and felt was not just another corporate holiday affair.  This party is an annual occurrence for Day’s employees and it has been going on for 22 years.  Everyone was dressed in festive, striking attire and almost everyone in the room knew each other.  Good times were indeed ahead!  I was amazed when Jeff and Kathy Corey, owners of Day’s, began the evening by recognizing their loyal staff.  It started when they asked all who had worked at Day’s for 5 years to stand and quite a few stood.  Then they asked for the 10 year folks and even more stood.  When they asked that the 20 year veterans stand and almost half the room was standing, I knew that this was an exceptional work family.

dsc_5147And that’s just it. I felt like I was with family.  As a matter of fact, my Mom has six brothers and when her side of the family gets together (it could almost be the same number of people if we got the whole crowd together at once), you feel the love.  And that’s what I felt.  I was an outsider, yet they all welcomed me and I laughed and ate yummy food and performed a song (that’s another story).  It felt like a big family reunion and I knew I was “in” when just before I was leaving, I was offered a homemade Jello shot prepared by one of my new family friends at Day’s.

This recollection of my experience at the Day’s holiday party has prompted me to remember a few of these moments this 2013 Holiday Season.  Sure we promote and sell beautiful, sparkly items to celebrate and honor those we love.  Feeling and passing this love around matters most, especially with your family.  So laugh, eat delicious meals and share something from your heart this holiday season.

Happy Holidays, from Day's Jewelers and Forevermark!

  • Make-a-Wish, Grant a Wish!

If a dream is wish your heart makes, then four-year-old Hope from Portland, Maine, must have been dreaming a lot about Elmo. Hope has been battling brain cancer and wished to meet the Seseme Street Gang. The Make-A-Wish Foundation heard her wish and recently told her that her wish would be granted! Hope and her seven-year-old sister, Quinn, are going to a Sesame Street Resort at Beaches in Jamaica with their parents, Sue and Jay where the whole Seseme Street crew will be waiting for them!

    ssesstreet-resized-600.jpg

Hope's trip is also made possible by Jewelers for Children, a national organization that was founded in 1999 with the mission of helping children in need.  Since Jewelers for Children was created, Day's Jewelers has been a strong advocate for Jeweler's for Children and has helped make some of their missions possible.

dsc00938-resized-600.jpgIn December, Day's Jewelers guests helped to raise more than $3,400 that was donated to Jewelers for Children during our Holiday Celebration.

To celebrate their trip, Hope, Quinn, and their parents stopped by Day's in South Portland to celebrate their trip with cake, Elmo, and even some dancing!

It is the generous support of the people in our communities that make granting wishes for children like Hope possible. Thank you for that support and we hope that you'll join us in wishing Hope and her family "Bon Voyage" as the head to Jamaica to meet Elmo and the rest of the gang in person!
