  • Why Forevermark?

I’ve been asked many times, “Why is this Forevermark Diamond better than the GIA diamond I found online?

My response; “That’s a great question!

Well, let me start by saying… GIA is not a brand it is a report and just an opinion. I repeat… Just an opinion. Forevermark Diamonds are graded far beyond the 4’c, and who better to grade the diamond then De Beers. No one has touched, seen, or mined more diamonds in the history of the earth than De Beers. Each diamond has been carefully selected for its natural inherent beauty.

Another question that comes up from time to time. “Is this a conflict diamond (blood diamond), and what does this do to the environment?”

Forevermark, as a part of the De Beers Group of Companies is committed to ensuring that each diamond from rough to polish has met strict standards and guidelines along its journey. With responsible business practices, the advancement of women, and protection of the natural world. For example, the 3 to 1 rule... For every 1 acre mined, 3 acres are set aside for conservation and natural wildlife sanctuaries.

Recently a friend asked me, "Ray, how do I choose the perfect diamond?"

In my opinion, it’s always best to purchase a diamond by looking at the diamond and multiple comparisons. Buy the diamond that speaks to you, never purchase a diamond by just reading its grading report. Two diamonds with the same 4c’s can and will look completely different. There is always a reason one is more valuable than the other. In most cases, you’ll be able to see that difference.

Forevermark is committed to ensuring that you will see the difference.

That’s why Days Jewelers is proud to be partnered with De Beers, and selected to be a part of that journey to offer the world’s most responsibly sourced, and most carefully selected diamonds.

  • Opal Myth Debunked!

“It’s bad luck to wear opal if it’s not your birthstone.”

This is something that we hear from our guests on a regular basis. Where does this superstition come from? Frank, from Parle Jewelry Designs/Idaho Opal and Gem Corporation let us in on history of this well-known belief:
In 1829, Sir Walter Scott published a novel titled, Anne of Geierstein (or The Maiden of the Mist). This according to Frank, was the Harry Potter of its time! In this novel. The Baroness of Arnheim wears a talisman made of Opal bestowed with magical powers. When holy water is splashed on the opal, it loses its colors and the Baroness becomes a pile of ash. It is because of this fictional scene that people started to associate opals with bad omens.
Long before Sir Walter Scott’s fantastical tale, the ancient Greeks and Romans thought the opal was a symbol of good luck and fortune. Due to its many colors, the opal was a symbol of hope like the rainbow. It was often given as a gift to bring protection and wealth to the wearer. The “gift from the heavens” women often wore the gem in their hair to ensure their hair color would not fade. Opals were originally thought to possess magical qualities and bring its wearer foresight. They were used to help shy, timid people be more open in social situations as they were thought to have the power to amplify feelings and desires and promote spontaneity.
Throughout most of history, the opal has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all of the gems because it can show all colors. Black, boulder, fire or doublet, there is no denying the magnificence of opals. A single gem can flash every color with fire and intensity beyond that any diamond.

Camp Sunshine is an organization dedicated to helping children cope with serious illnesses along with their families. JFC, a non-profit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999 is dedicated to helping children in need. More than 20,000 people across America were motivated to vote for their favorite, local charity.  Day’s Jewelers worked in conjunction with Camp Sunshine to encourage people to vote.  When the final tallies were reported, Camp Sunshine earned a spot in the top 10 winning the $5,000 grant.

Day’s Augusta Store Manager Valentin (LT) Sierra, describes Camp Sunshine and their works. • Announcement! New Styles Available for Your Man

Guest blogger: Jessi Eyre, Marketing & PR Specialist at Lashbrook

Attention brides and grooms! We have the coolest gent’s rings now available at Day’s Jewelers. These new styles from Lashbrook are truly one of a kind. Check them out below!

    Meteorite.

These Meteorite rings by Lashbrook feature authentic Gibeon Meteorite. Gibeon Meteorite exploded upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, landing in the desert of Namibia, Africa in scattered pieces over an area 171 miles long and 62 miles wide. The Namibian government banned the export of Gibeon Meteorite, as any newly discovered pieces are automatically protected as national monuments. This means that any meteorite specimens in circulation are of increasing value and incredibly limited supply.

This rare type of meteorite is composed of metals which were formed in a super-heated state and cooled over the course of four billion years. This slow cooling settled the molecules in a unique crystalline structure, similar to what you’d see in a diamond or gemstone. Because Meteorite is a natural material, each Meteorite ring will be unique with now two rings being identical.

These new Meteorite styles look cool regardless of what the base metal is. Pictured from left to right: Cobalt Chrome, Rose Gold, black Zirconium, Cobalt Chrome.

    Damascus Steel.

Damascus Steel rings by Lashbrook are made by hand, mimicking ancient metalsmithing techniques originally used to make samurai swords. Using two alternating types of stainless steel, Lashbrook master craftsman heat, bond, twist and fold the metal layers together to produce vivid patterns. After patterning the metal, there can be up to 100 layers in each piece of finished Damascus. Because it is handmade, each Damascus Steel ring is unique – no two designs will look exactly alike.

These Damascus Steel styles hold that ‘wow’ factor and are going to be a crowd favorite in no time. Pair your favorite style with precious metal, such as the White or Rose Gold inlays.

    Hardwood.

Lashbrook uses ethically sourced Hardwood for wood rings. Each piece of hardwood varies slightly in character, color, and grain pattern, ensuring every wood ring is truly one of a kind. Wood’s raw, organic nature and inherent beauty is both rustic and refined. Its rich origin and exclusive markings speak to its distinctness amongst traditional metal wedding bands.

These slick hardwood bands are for the guys that want to stand out. Pictured: black Zirconium with Leopard wood, Cobalt Chrome with Honduras Redheart and Damascus Steel with Mexican Cocobollo wood.

  • Day’s Jewelers Selected Among Best Places to Work in Maine for a Third Year

Day’s Jewelers was recently named as one of the 2017 Best Places to Work in Maine. The awards program was created in 2006 and is a project of the Society for Human Resource Management - Maine State Council (MESHRM) and Best Companies Group. Partners endorsing the program include: Mainebiz, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and Maine HR Convention.

Kathy, Jeff and Jim Corey, owners of Day’s Jewelers, have truly created a business that makes its employees proud. “Kathy, my brother Jim and I were raised in the St. John Valley in Northern Maine where family is such an important part of the local culture. The three of us, along with my 5 other siblings, worked together in my Mom and Dad’s business, Robert’s Jewelry in Madawaska. Family has always been important to us. As we’ve built Day’s over the years, it was our goal to create a family environment among our staff,” says Jeff Corey.

Kathy Corey thanks her employees for this award which has been claimed in 2014, 2015 and now 2017. “Receiving this award is truly an honor, but mostly it’s a tribute to the 140 employees who work at Day’s.  They are the real heroes.”

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings.

Day’s Jewelers Human Resources Director Kristie Jandreau knows exactly how this award was earned., “It’s because of what we do and, most importantly, why we do it. We are surrounded by beautiful gems, sparkling diamonds, and the latest fashion accessories. We spend our work days in luxurious showrooms with guests looking for that special piece to commemorate an important occasion or symbol of their love. Relationships are formed with our guests that last for many years. Day’s employees enjoy people and building relationships with our guests and with each other. Day’s employees often describe their co-workers as family.”

Other employees agree; Company Photographer and Content Producer, Brian Chick says, “We are given the tools and support to succeed with in-house training and continued education outside of the workplace.” Lindsay Nodden, Assistant Buyer said, “I think the reason why we won best places to work in Maine is because people genuinely enjoy their jobs here.  How could you not, working with beautiful things and amazing people every day!”

Day’s Jewelers will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in Maine awards ceremony on October 10 and will be listed in a special publication by Mainebiz. The final rankings will be announced at the event.

What makes a Northern Star diamond so special?
Every Northern Star diamond has 90 facets, 32 more than a traditional diamond. The extra facets, requiring additional time, craftsmanship, and expertise, help to prevent light from “leaking” out of the back of the diamond. These strategic cuts maximize the amount of light that is returned to the viewer making it visibly brighter.

  • Everyday Elegance in Swarovski

I admire our merchandise team for their strict criteria; pieces are picked with environmental and ethical concerns in mind, whether or not they can last a lifetime (in most cases many lifetimes) and their quality.

Swarovski is a designer that matches this criteria with some of our more obtainable pieces in both everyday fashion and elegant statements. We can get behind that.

Ball Chain and Bead Chain Ball or Bead Chain

BOX CHAIN:  The four sided construction of the box chain creates a durable chain with an extraordinary look.  It is made from round wire which is rolled flat and then folded into square links that form open boxes or cubes creating a smooth four sided shape.  Add a pendant to the box chain to create an elegant look.

    Box Chain Box Chain

BYZANTINE CHAIN: Is an intricate, closely linked sequential chain design that incorporated a rope-like texture and intriguing textural design.  Soft, flexible with an elegant drape, the byzantine link is instantly recognized by its maze-like intricacy.

CABLE CHAINS:  Strong, durable and attractive, the cable chain is a heavy chain having links with a crossbar across the inside of each link.  Each section of the cable chain is identical throughout giving it a simple but classic look.

    Cable Chain Cable Chain

C LINK Chain:  Made up of solid ‘C’ shaped sections that fit into one another in a repeating pattern for a style that is both on-trend and beautifully classic.  It is designed to lie flat and noted for its flexibility.

Closed Link Chain Closed Link Chain

FIGARO CHAIN: Comprised of flat twisted links.  It is a modified version of the curb chain where the interlocking flat links vary in size.  It lays flat around the neck, is crafted with strength and durability and its versatility gives it a sense of fashion and style.  Originated in Italy.

FOXTAIL CHAIN:   Two rows of slanted oval links face each other at a 45 degree angle in the Foxtail chain.  They are connected by a series of flat rings running down the chain’s center.  This created the impression of the hairs on a fox’s tail.

FRANCO CHAIN:  The Franco chain is a thicker type of chain made with v-shaped links.  The chain is sturdy and can support heavy pendants.

    Franco Chain Franco Chain

HERRINGBONE CHAIN:  Multiple rows of v-shaped links are used to make up this type of chain.  They lie completely flat, and each row alternates in direction creating the herringbone pattern.

LINK CHAIN:  The link chain is the most common type of chain.  It is formed of individual oval or round links interlocked in a uniform pattern with each link lying 90 degrees to the next.  This chain is popular for its simple but classic look.

Popular for its overall strength and its reflective qualities.  Omega chain is made up of metal links assembled on a wire or woven mesh that form a tube. The embedded wire is what provides the strength. The Omega chain is somewhat flexible, but it is still sufficiently rigid that it retains its ring shape when worn.

    Omega Chain Omega Chain

RAILROAD CHAIN:  This chain features two continuous lines with cross bars that form the tracks for a stylish design.

    Railroad Chain Railroad Chain

ROLO CHAIN:  The links of the Rolo chain are usually smaller and thicker than that those of a cable chain and they tend to be oval or round.  The links are flat on the inside and alternate in the direction they face.  This is a popular chain used for charm bracelets.

ROPE CHAIN:  Rows of metal links are woven for this type of chain creating the appearance of a two strand rope.  The join of each link is like a tiny hinge, meaning this style is not as flexible or liquid-like as some others.

    Rope Chain Rope Chain

SHADBELLY CHAIN:  Its construction is composed of points that are similar to shadbelly points used to enhance riding jackets worn by equestrians. The necklace's links are woven closely together to provide strength as well as elegance.

SINGAPORE CHAIN:  Flat diamond cut chain links are woven together to form a diamond shape.  These diamond shaped links are then woven together, creating the Singapore chain.  It is eye catching as it reflects light from different angles.  The chain also has a natural curve, created by the weaving process, that is pleasing to the eye.

SNAKE CHAIN:  Crafted of smooth, round metal plates or bands,  the chain has a curve at the mid-point of each link.  The links are then joined to create a continual flexible tube reminiscent of a snake skin due to a slight zigzag pattern.

    Snake Chain Snake Chain

WHEAT CHAIN:  A symmetrical type of rope chain, the wheat chain features small figure 8 links that display as a plaited appearance.  Also known as the Espiga or Spiga chain, it is a symbol of wealth or faith.

  • Catch Me Behind the Camera

My passion lies in filmmaking, a naturally turbulent creative process; all the preparation in the world can’t keep the variables of change at bay. I love the challenge of producing beauty from a chaotic environment. It’s the same reason I'm captivated by natural gemstones. Against all odds, in the harshest environments, under immense pressure, diamonds and gemstones are formed. What an inspiration! Even in the toughest moments one can always shine bright and prevail.

I’m proud to be a new member of the Day’s team where “standing the test of time” is a mission. An encouraging mantra for a young artist striving to create lasting works. Not only is the goal to leave a lasting impression but to do it in style.
