  • Opal Myth Debunked!

“It’s bad luck to wear opal if it’s not your birthstone.”

This is something that we hear from our guests on a regular basis. Where does this superstition come from? Frank, from Parle Jewelry Designs/Idaho Opal and Gem Corporation let us in on history of this well-known belief:
In 1829, Sir Walter Scott published a novel titled, Anne of Geierstein (or The Maiden of the Mist). This according to Frank, was the Harry Potter of its time! In this novel. The Baroness of Arnheim wears a talisman made of Opal bestowed with magical powers. When holy water is splashed on the opal, it loses its colors and the Baroness becomes a pile of ash. It is because of this fictional scene that people started to associate opals with bad omens.
Long before Sir Walter Scott’s fantastical tale, the ancient Greeks and Romans thought the opal was a symbol of good luck and fortune. Due to its many colors, the opal was a symbol of hope like the rainbow. It was often given as a gift to bring protection and wealth to the wearer. The “gift from the heavens” women often wore the gem in their hair to ensure their hair color would not fade. Opals were originally thought to possess magical qualities and bring its wearer foresight. They were used to help shy, timid people be more open in social situations as they were thought to have the power to amplify feelings and desires and promote spontaneity.
Throughout most of history, the opal has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all of the gems because it can show all colors. Black, boulder, fire or doublet, there is no denying the magnificence of opals. A single gem can flash every color with fire and intensity beyond that any diamond.

  • A Day’s Jewelers Cliff's of Moher Proposal

    Day's Jewelers Proposal Story:

Hi my nameimage2 is Michelle Devereux. My fiancé Ryan Sylvain proposed to me on June the 9, 2016 at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. We have been together 2 and half years.

    image4

I recently brought Ryan to Ireland for my cousins wedding. I moved to the USA with my parents when I was 7 but both my mother and father reside in Ireland. We traveled around Ireland for a few days with my brother and a couple of friends. Ryan carried the ring around with him while we were traveling and a few times he thought I was sure I would find out.

image3On Thursday the 9th, on our last stop back to Cork, we visited the Cliff's of Moher. We were taking photos and laughing and the Ryan dropped to one knee. I remember he was nervously asking my brother for the ring, I remember spacing out into the ocean not believing this was happening. I thought I was in a dream. A wave of emotion came over me and I said yes while crying, but Ryan did this in a country (Ireland) that is so dear to my heart and will always be my home.

He definitely put thought into and it will be a day I will never forget. Ryan told me that Day's Jewelers was great to work with and I felt so comfortable with Day's too. Our big day isn't till October 2018, but I wouldn't trade June 9th 2016 on the Cliff's of Moher for anything.

  • If I Picked My Own Engagement Ring...

Working in the jewelry industry, it is always interesting to see the different styles of engagement rings and seeing how people react to the styles. One thing I hear is "It’s all about the size of the diamond." Is it really? There are many factors that go into determining the brilliance and beauty of a diamond including color, cut, clarity as well as carat. In some cases, the cut of the diamond distorts the carat weight; giving the diamond more weight that brilliance. If I were choosing my own diamond I'd go for a better cut than more carat weight. I'm traditional in that when someone chooses the perfect ring for me, I want it to be a complete surprise. My future husband-to-be should know my style and taste well enough that he could choose the best ring for me. Either way it would be perfect because it would be from him.

This brings up another point - when in doubt, go for a solitaire ring. They are timeless and beautiful. I want my future engagement ring something that stays in style forever. To all of the future husbands-to-be: research, research, research! It is always important to understand what your diamond specialist is telling you. Ask for certifications and don't be afraid to compare apples to apples. It’s a big purchase, and tons of thought goes into it. I think I can speak for everyone when I say "Take your time." You may see a diamond you like in the first store you visit, but if you don't have the feeling in your stomach that that is the diamond then don't feel pressured to buy. If you shop in a Day's store or online at www.daysjewelers.com, our salespeople know that is a nerve-wracking and exciting step and we want to make sure that you have the best ring for your budget. Make sure you have a clear budget in mind before you start shopping, too. Don't go above your means - this is supposed to be a happy purchase, not a "how am I going to pay for this" purchase. One way to better service the cost of a ring would be either Layaway options or in store credit. Day's offers both. If you are planning on using either of these, it is better to shop early and plan ahead so you have the ring in time to pop the question.

So, if I could choose my ring what would it be? I think I'll wait and see what that special someone gives me one day in the future :).  But, I do like these styles:

  • Tahitian Pearl Jewelry: A New Take on the Old Classic

Pearl jewelry and pearl strands have been in vogue since their discovery by the pre-modernized civilizations. Pearls have always been associated with love, purity and wisdom. It is a modern tradition that a Bride wears pearls on her wedding day to represent all of the aforementioned virtues. Pearls are being sewn on wedding gowns or worn as earrings or necklaces during the ceremony. Pearls add a touch of class to any outfit and will never fade out of fashion. Pearls have been the inspiration for artists, poets and designers for centuries. Cartier, a world renowned name in the jewelry industry, made his mark by creating a large double strand pearl necklace in his New York studio in the early 1900s. Pearls are a classic addition to any jewelry box and can be passed on from generation to generation. It is not uncommon for a bride to wear her grandmother's strand of pearls on her wedding day. Hey, it’s something old, right?

Traditionally, white pearls are highlighted in the fashion industry. However, pearls can vary in color from red, pink, gray, cream and even black. Tahitian pearls, also known as Black Pearls, come from the rare black lipped oyster found in the waters near French Polynesia. These pearls are so rare that only one out of every 10,000 naturally occurring black lipped oyster has this treasure inside. These black pearls can also vary in color from a rich charcoal, eggplant, green, blue or gray. Each color is naturally occurring and unique to that pearl. The dark charcoal colored Tahitian pearls have a reddish hue that surrounds them - that is how the consumer can identify if the pearl is real or not.

In order to save this precious pearl, the black lipped oyster was saved from extinction in the early 1990's and are now raised in captivity and protected. Each pearl that is created is a beautiful work of art. Day's offers a wide variety of pearl collections from Honora, Princesse Pearls, and Mastoloni. Each designer has a unique style and can satisfy any budget and style.

Below are some of my favorite Tahitian pearl picks offered at Days:
