  • Catch Me Behind the Camera

My passion lies in filmmaking, a naturally turbulent creative process; all the preparation in the world can’t keep the variables of change at bay. I love the challenge of producing beauty from a chaotic environment. It’s the same reason I'm captivated by natural gemstones. Against all odds, in the harshest environments, under immense pressure, diamonds and gemstones are formed. What an inspiration! Even in the toughest moments one can always shine bright and prevail.

I’m proud to be a new member of the Day’s team where “standing the test of time” is a mission. An encouraging mantra for a young artist striving to create lasting works. Not only is the goal to leave a lasting impression but to do it in style.

    Catch me behind the camera.

The wearing of birthstones is thought to bring good luck and good health. Astrologers long ago attributed supernatural powers to certain gemstones.

Named after seawater, Aquamarine’s fresh watery hue is a cool plunge into a refreshing pool.  From the light blue of the sky to the deep blue of the sea, the aquamarine shines over an extraordinarily beautiful range of mainly light blue colors.  It is the birthstone of March and thought to enhance the happiness of marriages and the lucky crystals for the people of Pisces.  It is also the symbol of a 19th wedding anniversary.

The greenish blue Aquamarine protects those who journey by sea, alleviating the fear of water and guards those involved in any long travel such as flying or driving long distances.

  • Learn About Peridot, August's Birthstone

jpdpe0297Happy Birthday to all of our August readers! I love your birthstone, Peridot.

Peridot is a unique and radiant lime green stone, prized by Hawaiians as the goddess Pele's tears. Some beaches in Oahu contain crushed grains of Peridot in the sand. The depth of green in this August birthstone can vary from a light yellow-green to an olive brown color and grows more intense beneath evening light.

    rpdd0316

This gemstone is said to remove all traces of fear and create a state of restfulness for its wearer. Bestowing wisdom and courage, Peridot is also considered by many to be a sign of wealth (this must be why I like it so much, I have always been told I have expensive taste).

jerpd0302Peridot comes lava fields and meteorites. Actually, most Peridot is mined right in the USA, in Arizona. However, within the past twenty years, new deposits of Peridot have been discovered in Pakistan among the Himalaya Mountains. The most famous and rare variety, Kashmir Peridot, is a very vivid stone that comes from Pakistan.

Peridot ranks a 6.5-7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale and is suitable for every day wear. However, some Peridot edges can be brittle so it should be warn with some caution. Peridot is sometimes permanently heat treated to bring out the brightest green possible.

If you have any questions or comments please let us know. Happy Birthday again to all of our August fans, friends, readers and customers.

  • April Birthstone, Part 3 - Diamond Carat

April Birthstone, Part 3 of our Diamond Learn About Series.

    Diamond Carat:

When Jewelers refer to a diamond's carat they are actually referring to the weight of the stone, not the size. In jewelry, the size of a stone is measured in millimeters; since diamonds can be cut shallow, deep or ideally, it is impossible to accurately convert a diamond's carat weight into an exact mm size. However, a very rough conversion can be made. Despite the ability to very roughly convert carat weight to size, the only accurate way to know the true carat weight of your diamond is to weigh it. Thus, 1 carat has become universally known as being a metric weight of 0.02 grams. The weight of a diamond has the most significant impact on its price. Since the larger a stone is, the rarer it is; one 2 carat diamond will be more expensive than the total cost of two 1 carat diamonds of the same quality. The carat of a diamond is often very important to people when shopping but it is a mistake to sacrifice too much quality for sheer size.

You may also hear jewelers refer to a diamond's carat weight as a number of "points."

Below is a generally accepted list of point conversions to fractions of a carat.

    Acceptable Diamond Conversions

    1/10 Carat= 9 points -12 points
    1/7 Carat= 13 points -17 points
    1/5 Carat= 18 points – 22 points
    1/4 Carat= 23 points - 29 points
    1/3 Carat= 30 points - 36 points
    3/8 Carat= 37 points – 46 points
    1/2 Carat= 47 points – 56 points
    5/8 Carat= 57 points – 68 points
    3/4 Carat= 69 points - 81 points
    7/8 Carat= 82 points - 94 points
    1 Carat= 95 points - 110 points

  • April Birthstone, Part 2 - Diamond Clarity

Part two of our April Birthstone - Diamond Series!

    Diamond Clarity:

Clarity refers to the number of "inclusions" that are found inside of a diamond. Inclusions are scratches, trace minerals, or other tiny characteristics or markings that can detract from the way light bounces from mirror to mirror (known as "facets") within a diamond.

It is extremely rare to find a diamond without inclusions. Inclusions are distinguishing characteristics which represent the uniqueness of each diamond and are often called the diamond's "fingerprint" because no two stones are exactly alike. If a diamond is found without any inclusions it ranked "flawless," and can be quite costly.

The number of inclusions in a diamond is determined on a scale based on the visibility and location of these flaws when the diamond is beneath 10x magnification. Two common diamond grading houses are the Gemological Institute of America [GIA] and the American Gem Society [AGS]. Each has its own unique way of ranking and ‘grading' a diamond's clarity.

Left is a chart displaying the rankings from Flawless to ‘Included' and which AGS numbers correspond with which GIA letters so you can most effectively compare "apples to apples" in your quest for the perfect diamond.

"Feathers" look like a bird's feather in the stone and can be a structural problem if any of the tiny cracks are close enough to the diamond's surface.

"Pinpoints" look like clear or white bubbles within the diamond and can change the way light is distributed throughout it depending on their size.

"Carbon Spots" are black, brown or other dark colored dots or specks inside the diamond. Many low priced I clarity stones are priced low because of distracting carbon spots in obvious places that cannot be hidden or removed.

"Clouds" are simply a group of pin-point inclusions. Clouds look like empty masses within the diamond and can cause the diamond to be more susceptible to breakage if they are close enough to its surface.

"Needles" look like thin, empty tubes and can be very obvious or small and slight. If they are close enough to the surface or stretch long enough they may cause the diamond to be more susceptible to cracking.

  • April Birthstone, Diamonds.

Over the course of the month of April, we are going to talk about the 4 C's of Diamonds (1 a week for the month of April!). Diamonds happen to be the birthstone of the month for April as well.

    Diamond Cut:

One matter of preference is the shape that a diamond is cut into. Any shape other than a classic round is called a "fancy cut". Some of the most common fancy cut shapes are:

    diamondshapes-1

Fancy cut diamonds make an extremely strong statement and are a unique and beautiful way to distinguish your personality and style.

dstqf0288_1The most complex factor affecting a diamond's price is its cut. Today, diamond cutting is still done by human hands. When a diamond cutter fashions a stone, he or she must make crucial and often difficult decisions concerning its size, shape and number of imperfections. After these decisions are made, it is the craftsmanship and fine motor skills of the diamond cutter that determines how much the stone will sparkle and how much attention the final product will draw. The slightest mistake can ruin a diamond's symmetry and in doing so, dramatically decline the beauty and value of the stone. Even a flawless and colorless stone can become dull if it is poorly cut.

When properly cut, a diamond will send almost all of the light that comes into it back out of its top. If improperly cut, a significant amount of the light will exit out of the bottom or side of the stone instead.

In a correct cut, the diamond will have the following features:

Brilliance - Return a white shaft of light from its top

White light is commonly referred to as brilliance. It is produced by light coming in through the various top facets and bouncing off of the bottom facets. Brilliance is what gets your diamond noticed from across a room and can only be quantitatively measured by a GemEx Brilliance-Scope. Though limited quantitatively, the human eye is able to qualitatively measure the brilliance of a diamond.

stockfoto_26063914_S-300x300Scintillation - Sparkle every time that it moves

The term used for the radiance or sparkle of the changing color light rays that appear when the diamond is moved or when the light source changes. Scintillation can only be quantitatively measured by a GemEx Brilliance-Scope. Remarkably, the human eye is able to qualitatively measure the scintillation of a diamond.

Fire - Reflect rainbows throughout its many facets

The ‘dispersion' or colored light of a diamond is commonly referred to as ‘fire.’ Fire is the rainbow that should jump from a diamond. Fire can only be quantitatively measured by a GemEx Brillance-Scope Analyzer that determines what percent of the total diamond returns bright colored light to the observer. Though unable to measure quantitatively, the human eye is able to qualitatively measure the fire of a diamond.

An appropriately cut diamond will also have symmetrical facets (the windows and mirrors of the stone); good proportions (not too deep or too shallow) and carefully finished details (i.e. flawless polishing and permanent treatments). To better understand the factors of a diamond and how it is cut you can read 34 Factors of a Diamond.

These elements of a diamond's light mix in unique and fascinating ways. It is solely a matter of each individual's preference as to what the best mixture of these elements is.

  • Happy Birthday March, Aquamarine

Aquamarine gets its name from the Latin word meaning "water of the sea," which accurately depicts its cool light blue, yellow and pink colors. Primarily a gemstone mined in Brazil, Aquamarine can be found in a wide variety of places and colors, but is a deep shade of blue in its rarest form.

raqd0353Years ago, Aquamarine was believed to be what mermaid's tails were made of. Another legend says that King Neptune of the sea gave aquamarine to mermaids as gifts, and it has since been a symbol of love and endearment, making it a popular anniversary gift. Supposedly, this gemstone was also coveted by sailors as a charm for safety on the water and to remind them of their loved ones far away.

Aquamarine is a type of beryl stone and is mined throughout the world. Aquamarine that come from the Santa Maria Mine in Brazil are rare, intense blue aquamarines that "make every jeraq0190gemstone lover's heart beat faster" (ICGA). Another famous type of Aquamarine is the Espirito Santo from Brazil which have a blue that is not quite as intense as Santa Maria Aquamarine.

A durable gemstone, Aquamarine ranks at 7.5-8 out of 10 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness) and can easily be worn on a daily basis. Commonly worn as the light blue birthstone of March, Aquamarine is sometimes permanently heat treated to remove traces of green from its blue color.
