Fun Facts: Birthstone Legends

With every birthstone comes a legend surrounding that particular stone. Some stones' legends are a bit more far fetched than others, while a few help to explain the beauty behind the stone itself. It’s fun to hear what the legend behind your particular birthstone is and if it pertains to you and your life. So what month were you born?

education-birthstone-chart-lgJanuary’s birthstone is Garnet; Garnet is a deep reddish brown color that can come in many different shades. The legend behind a Garnet is that in medieval times the stones were thought to cure depression and protect against bad dreams, almost like a dream catcher.

Amethyst is February’s birthstone and it is considered the color of Royalty. Purple was an expensive dye to purchase which is why only Royalty was able to afford to have their clothes dyed that color. According to folklore, Amethyst guarantees success in sports, war and business (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

March’s birthstone is gorgoues. Aquamarine comes from the Latin meaning “of the sea.”During the Middle Ages Europeans believed this gem gave its wearer wisdom and the ability to overcome evil (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

April’s birthstone is one of the most coveted birthstones of them all. Diamonds have always been coveted for their rarity and beauty, and the Romans believed that Cupids arrows were tipped with diamonds. Diamonds are a symbol of love, romance and commitment.

Emerald is the birthstone of May and the deep green beauty behind the stone is said to symbolize fertility and life, and the Romans dedicated this stone to Venus, their Goddess of love ( DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

Pearl is a stone that comes in multiple shapes and colors.  The birthstone of June has been associated with moon and water, due to its appearance and origin, and also symbolizes purity and love.

Ruby is a gemstone that is steeped in Legend and Lore, July’s birthstone is said to preserve physical and mental health, and prevent evil thoughts. Ruby is one of the world’s rarest and costliest gems and is said to be the “Gem King” (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

Peridot, August's birthstone, is called “Gem of the Sun”, and prospectors looked for it at night and were able to locate it by its glow. Peridot is said to attract wealth and drive away evil spirits.

Sapphires come in so many different shades and colors, September’s birthstone is said to be linked with Royalty throughout history. Kings and Queen’s wore them to protect again treachery. This stone is said to signify truth, sincerity and faithfulness (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

Opal is another stone that comes in multiple colors and shades, a lot of these stones have multiple colors in one stone. Opal is considered the most magical of gems because it shows all the colors of all the other gems combined their flashing colors are born from lightening according to Middle Eastern Folklore (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

Citrine is the color of November and has a deep yellow color. Citrine is said to guard its wearer from evil thoughts.

 

imagesDecember’s stone is Blue Topaz, topaz comes in lots of different colors and is said to give the wearer strength and was credited with the power to overcome evil magic (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).  December is a lucky month with two stones, and Tanzanite is Decembers other birthstone. The story behind it’s color is that a wildfire changed crystal lying on the ground from pale brown to rich blue (DCA Colored Stones, Compendium).

So as you can see there are many different legends and lore’s behind the different birthstones. Many of the come from superstition while some come from the origin of the stone and what people feel it might protect them from. While Lore’s and Legends aren’t considered facts, it is still fun to know the history behind the stone that you wear.
